Nine Questions That Got My Readers Talking — Which One Would You Answer?

The best conversations I’ve ever had on this blog didn’t start with me talking — they started with me asking.

Which of the questions would you most like to answer? Drop it in the comments.

Each of the questions above links to a recent post I’ve published – ones you might have missed or may want to revisit. Either way, this is my latest roundup from Hugh’s Views and News, all gathered in one place for you.

Did I have a favourite post? Yes. The post about loneliness, although a piece of flash fiction, made me think about how my circle of family and friends seems to have gotten smaller as I have gotten older, prompting me to reach out.

Feel free to leave feedback on this new way I’m highlighting recent blog posts. It’s always great to hear from you.

What’s the one blogging question you’d love to see me tackle next? Drop it in the comments and it might just become my next post.

Those are interesting questions! The one I’d most like to answer is what I could do to help other bloggers.

Please let us know if you write a post answering that question. Many bloggers are always looking for some help.

yes yes yes I love this sort of thing. I will use it myself anon.

Do I owe you any reasonable attorneys fees?

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Ha! That’s one area I try to stay clear of.

Yes, I do believe in ghosts and the unexplained, as I’ve had experience with both. I also understand how easy it is to dismiss these things as nonsense (as I did) before you’ve experienced them yourself.

Thank you for answering my question, Annabelle. I’d love to hear about your encounters with both of them sometime. Have you ever written about them?

      1. annabellefranklinauthor avatar

Yes, I wrote a whole book about them, but never published it as it involved several people I know and even if I’d changed their names they would still have recognised themselves. Funnily enough, though, I’m planning to write a blog post touching on those experiences this month, as they have inspired a lot of my fiction writing.

I’d love to read the post. Can you send me the link when it’s published?

As I usually average about 6 likes per blog I wouldn’t miss them. They can serve a purpose on a photo only blog like a Wordless Wednesday or One Word Sunday, but even then I usually, if not always, like to comment and do it properly. I do however not Like when I’m leaving a comment, particularly in an on-going conversation. In normal conversations we wouldn’t preface each reply with “I like that” – how odd would that be?

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

If I click like on a photography post, I’m doing so for a reason and try to convey that in a comment to the person who posted the photo, even if it’s just a few short sentences, Paul. I ask myself, ‘Why do I like the photo’ or ‘like that story’ when reading a piece of fiction. There are reasons, so why not say what they are instead of just saying ‘Nice photo’ or ‘Great story’ without explaining why we think that? After all, if we met somebody for coffee or a chat, we wouldn’t just say ‘Nice outfit’ or ‘You look nice’ and leave it at that, would we?

You may have noticed that I’ve stopped using the like button completely now because I found I wasn’t taking any notice of who had clicked ‘like’ on any of my posts or on other blogs. I may share the post on social media, but for me, it’s all about giving my time to those who want to engage with me in a way that is a discussion rather than proving they visited.

Hugh, as always, I find your posts knowledgeable, entertaining, and beautifully written. Your post that stands out for me is helping other bloggers. I kindly suggest an About Me page, and the importance of categories and tags if these items are missing from a blog.

I started a new series “Dedicated to”, where I feature each blogger, individually. My post includes a link to their most recent post, and also to their About Me page. I also create an image I feel best suits the personality of the blogger or the blog. Since I started this project, the most fulfilling part is bloggers connecting with other bloggers. It’s really enjoyable to witness.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That sounds like a great new series to help promote other bloggers, Eugi. I hope that the majority of the bloggers you choose to feature do have an ‘About’ page and one that is updated. I’ve seen some ‘about’ pages that are years out of date. It seems to be an important page that is sadly often forgotten about by the person who wrote it.

Hugh, out of the 40 I’ve published, most have an About page, and I’m impressed. It’s interesting to read about our fellow bloggers.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s good to hear, Eugi. I always check the ‘about’ page of a blogger I’m thinking of following. If they don’t have one or it’s way out of date, I don’t follow.

Are there any such things as blogging myths? That’s too long a list to go into here. The answer is do whatever works for you. People have written books on what you should do on your blog. I find that ridiculous. I don’t need someone telling me what to eat, how to dress, what to read, etc.

I’ve read some wonderful advice on writing and blogging, amongst other things, that has proved very helpful, especially during my early days of blogging. I get lots of emails from other WordPress users thanking me for the WordPress tutorials I also write and publish.

But you’re right that it’s whatever works for you.
