How to Fix Commenting Issues on WordPress Email Notifications: A Simple Solution

If you receive email notifications from WordPress about new blog posts, you might face difficulties leaving comments on certain blogs.

When I attempt to leave a comment, I receive an error message.

The error message.

This issue only impacts comments made when opening posts from email, not those via the WordPress Reader or the bell icon in the notification centre of my blog.

The issue still exists at the time of this post. However, I have found that comments go through when replying to the You can also reply to this email to leave a comment message (see the image below).

Image highlighting the 'You can also reply to this email to leave a comment' link on a new post notification from WordPress.
Leave your comment via the ‘You can also reply to this email to leave a comment’ link.

You’ll see that it’s like replying to an email rather than leaving a comment on the post, so press the reply button to the email, draft your comment and click the send button. When you check the post, you’ll see your comment unless it’s waiting for approval by the blogger for which you’re leaving the comment.

I recently came across this message. I’m unsure how long it’s been appearing in WordPress emails, whether WordPress has temporarily added it to email notifications to address the issue, or whether it’s a permanent fix. Next time I talk with WordPress, I’ll ask them and update this post.

The important thing is that this method of leaving comments works, so there’s no longer a need to remember to copy comments before submitting them.

Update: See the below response from a staff member at WordPress to me.

An image of a comment from a member of staff at WordPress about the problem involving not be able to leave comments via the WordPress new blog post notification email.
WordPress is working on the problem that is causing some comments to fail.

I inquired with WordPress about whether the text ‘You can also reply to this email to leave a comment at the bottom of their notifications is a recent addition. They confirmed that this specific wording is new; however, the ability to leave comments by replying to emails has been available for a long time.

Update 2

WordPress has now resolved this problem. I’m no longer seeing the error message.

However, if you still get the ‘Sorry, this comment could not be posted’ message when leaving comments, please contact WordPress.

Is this commenting problem affecting you? Please feel free to ask any questions by leaving a comment.

Wow! Thank you for this information, Hugh. You are always so helpful and I am going to try doing it this way.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

It’s certainly causing me no problems when commenting by replying to the WordPress email, Eugi.

      1. Eugi avatar

I tried it and had no problems commenting, Hugh.

  2. Cathy avatar

I don’t usually reply via emails, but the problem I’ve had sometimes is the pop up saying I need to sign in to reply when I’m already signed in. I haven’t had that for a couple of days so hopefully it’s sorted

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That problems seems to come and go and I have found that it is usually associated with updates being done by WordPress, Cathy. However, users seeing that pop-up all the time need to take action with the device they are using.

      1. Cathy avatar

I see it only on some blogs, one I was trying this morning wouldn’t let me comment on the blog or Jetpack. It’s very frustrating.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

The problem may be at their end, Cathy. If they are using an outdated theme no longer supported by WordPress could be one reason.

          1. Cathy avatar

Oh yes, I didn’t think of that, Hugh. Thanks.

I have not noticed this link when leaving a comment and receiving the error message, Hugh. I’ll keep an eye on it. When I get that error message, I hit the back button, copy my comment, refresh the page, and try again. That often does the trick.

My newest issue leaving comments is that when I accidentally click the back button to delete a mistake and when I click it twice or too fast, the entire paragraph gets deleted. Very annoying.

My newest issue leaving comments is that when I accidentally click the back button to delete a mistake and I click it twice or too fast, the entire paragraph gets deleted. Very annoying. My old issue of not being able to copy the entire comment (WordPress only allows you to copy one paragraph) still exists. As well as the comment not automatically starting with a capital letter and the difficulty of having one paragraph break between paragraph. The gap is always too big. Then I try to delete an empty line and before you know it, my entire paragraph is gone.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I sympathise with you about those problems, Liesbet. I don’t have those problems with my blog, but I know that your blog is self-hosted. Sometimes, bugs can affect WordPress.Com blogs (like mine) and not self-hosted blogs.

I’m not aware of the commenting problem affecting those with self-hosted blogs, but I could be wrong. Anyway, at least WordPress has given us a fix (that seems to work) for now. My fingers are crossed that they get rid of the bug so I can comment on posts I open via their email.

      1. Liesbet @ Roaming About avatar

I’m having those problems with every WordPress blog I leave a comment on. Just in my previous comment to you, when I tried to delete an empty line to make the gap between paragraphs smaller, the entire previous paragraph disappeared.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Are you able to use the ‘undo’ button so that everything comes back, Liesbet?

        2. Liesbet @ Roaming About avatar

Nope. The “undo” button doesn’t work for that. But this might be an iPad issue. Like I said, it’s all a bit annoying and time consuming. Better to keep my comments short, but you know me… :)

  4. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

It seems fixed. I haven’t tried on my desktop yet, but so far this is a relief, Hugh! And, no I don’t mind. Thanks again.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I did try leaving a comment via my desktop this morning by opening the post, but I got that error message. I think the new information in the WordPress email is something they’ve done as a temporary fix, Terri. I do hope they fix the bug that gives that error message, though. I’ll certainly ask them (when they get back to me).

  5. Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter avatar

I’ve recently started getting this message on some posts, but I use Feedly not WordPress to follow blogs, so it’s not just notifications by email! A real pain.

PS and it just happened now!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m not sure how Feedly works (as I don’t use it), but if the same problem happens there, it may be worth trying to reply to the WordPress new post email notification.

      1. Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter avatar

I don’t get email notifications, Feedly is a completely non-wordpress alternative. I just copy, refresh, paste. Hopefully it’s a bug they can fix!

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, it’s one you need to report to them.

  6. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

It worked, Hugh! And this is a new feature to address reading posts via email notifications! I am on my phone as I do this. HOORAY! And thank you for using my post as your example!

Because of the comment issue, I would check my email, then hop over to the Reader to find the post. WordPress has worked to get this issue resolved for now.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I hope you don’t mind me using your Wordless Wednesday post as an example, Terri. I know I’ve yet to get to your Sunday Stills post, too.

I’ve used that link several times now, and I’m not getting that error message at all. I go back to the post via the email link, open the post, and can see my comment (sometimes awaiting moderation). All the comments are going through. Somebody at WordPress has also been in touch. I’ll find out more about the link from them and will update this post.

Wow! Thanks, Hugh. I’ve never seen this reply to the comment link. I’ll have to look for it. There you are—on the ball once again!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I only noticed the link at the bottom of the WordPress email notification a few days ago, Colleen. I’ve used it several times and it has worked each time. No seeing that error message at all.

Thanks for linking to this post, too.

  9. Author Jan Sikes avatar

Thanks, Hugh. It’s been an annoying issue for sure.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I agree, Jan. although it only takes a few seconds to copy and paste the comment again, it is rather annoying.
Commenting via this new link seems to work well, though.
