Sunday Stills Photo Challenge: Capturing Ephemeral Moments

Some moments are here one minute and gone the next, but that’s exactly what makes them worth capturing. This week’s Sunday Stills theme is ‘Ephemeral,’ and I’m inviting you to join the hunt for fleeting beauty, funny surprises, and anything else that refuses to stick around. Grab your camera, look closely, and let’s see what wonderfully temporary moments you can find!

Welcome to Sunday Stills, a blogging challenge open to everyone.

I first came across the word I chose for this week’s theme on social media from another photography challenge run by Sheena, who hosts the Alphabet Challenge on Bluesky. I had no clue what it meant, but when I learned, I thought it was a great subject because it took me a while to find any photos that captured it meaningfully, so I saw it as a challenge.

Let me begin with a photo that captures an ephemeral scene, then tell you a little more about its meaning.

An outdoor photograph of a residential street with brick houses, under a dark, overcast sky. A prominent and rare double rainbow is visible arching across the sky above the houses. Frame elements like a brick pillar on the right are included. In the lower-right, a text watermark reads '@hughsviewsandnews.com'.

Not one, but two rainbows!

Ephemeral means something that lasts only a short time, existing briefly before fading away.

I think the rainbow photo is an excellent example of this. Not only were those two rainbows fleeting, but they also remind me that the world is beautiful, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Some believe that seeing a double rainbow is a sign of good fortune, transformation, and a powerful connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. I didn’t find any gold, but good fortune and transformation come in many forms.

If you look closely, you’ll see that the colours of the top rainbow appear inverted, with violet on the top and red at the bottom, something I hadn’t realised happens.

When your morning coffee stares back, and the real surprise hasn’t even hit yet

Have you ever seen a hippopotamus in your coffee? It may sound like a silly question, so imagine my surprise when I found one in mine.

Photo of a frothy coffee where the shape of the froth looks like a hippo floating in the coffee.

Can you spot him?

It was another fleeting visit, and he soon disappeared before I could ask his name. Thankfully, he disappeared before spotting the plate of biscuits next to me, something else that disappears quickly in our house.

Mirror, mirror

Mirror, mirror on a metal pole, who *nopes out* the fastest?

Given what this mirror did with my height, not just my figure, it made me think just how ephemeral your reflection can be.

A rectangular traffic mirror mounted on a grey pole in a grassy area reflects a large modern building with a curved roof. A person wearing a blue jacket stands in the centre foreground of the reflection, taking a picture, while a road and bare trees curve into the distance behind them. A wooden fence is visible in the background, out of the reflection.

Does this mirror make me look like I’ve been hit with the shrink ray?

But the biggest mystery was that although I knew what this mirror did, I had no idea what it was called.

I later found out it’s a convex traffic safety mirror (also commonly called a curved road mirror or blind spot mirror). It made me look like one of those images you see in fairground fun-house mirrors.

I didn’t like how it portrayed me, so needless to say, my image wasn’t visible very long.

Do these belong to you?

Whenever I spot footprints in snow, sand, or even in dried concrete, I can’t help but wonder who was wandering around leaving free samples of their shoe size.

Living near the beach, I’m surrounded by more footprints than a crime scene. They show up for a short cameo before the tide sweeps in like an overzealous cleaner and wipes the evidence away.

A top-down view of golden beach sand lit by low sunlight, casting long, soft shadows. Clear shoe prints with textured sole impressions walk across the surface. Small sea shells, pebbles, and tiny bits of driftwood are scattered across the damp sand.

Thankfully, no evidence of any crime remained after these footprints were washed away, but I did enjoy speculating who left them and what they’d done.

‘To leave footprints on the sands of time, it is necessary to have shoes that fit.’ — A. A. Milne

And finally…

Who doesn’t like going out with a ‘BANG’?

A vibrant night photo capturing a firework bursting into a starburst shape with gold streaks in the upper center of the frame. Below it, bright trails of light shoot upward amidst a glowing red smoke haze behind dark trees. Lush, pale green tree foliage frames the left and right sides of the image against the dark night sky.

Although my views on fireworks have changed over the years because of the dangers they can bring and the noise stress they can cause to some people and animals, thankfully I don’t hear or witness as many fireworks as I used to. They are being replaced more often with drone light shows, which I think are far more entertaining.

However, fireworks are a great example of something ‘Ephemeral.’

‘Fireworks are the only art form where a brilliant explosion of beauty is immediately followed by a sound that makes every dog in a three-mile radius question their life choices.’ – Author Unknown

Love the hippo in your coffee, Hugh 😄 and I’m very glad some mirror images don’t give a true reflection! A great prompt for this week.

    Here’s my post… https://betweenthelinesbookblog.com/2026/10/04/sundaystills-all-things-ephemeral-photography-nature/

Have you ever seen any strange foam creatures in your coffee, Cathy? The hippo was probably the best one I have seen. Thank goodness it fit snugly into the mug.

As for the strange mirrors, I’m staying well away from them from now on.

Thanks for the link. I’ll pop over and take a look.

Not that I can recall, Hugh but I will be looking more carefully in future.

Hugh, thank nk you for your beautiful theme and description. Seems fitting, too, as the seasons change to consider things ephemeral. Great gallery. Love your image of the footprints in the sand.

Thank you, Suzette. It’s a pleasure to host Sunday Stills while Terri is on vacation.

I didn’t know the word ephemeral until a few months ago. I love its meaning and thought it was a great way to kick off my two weeks of hosting Sunday Stills.

I’m lucky in that, living five minutes away from the beach, I get to see many footprints in the sand – both human and animal (mainly dogs).

Perfect images for the challenge, Hugh, thank you so much for taking the Sunday Stills reins these two weeks while I travel in Europe. Hopefully this won’t be an ephemeral experience for me!

Love the foam hippo! You have a good eye for finding something unusual! Rainbows, footprints in the sand and fireworks are fleeting indeed!

I’m commenting from a bistro in Amsterdam with Hans and his cousins who met up with us here from Germany! Have a fabulous week!

Hi Terri, welcome to Europe. I hope you are having a brilliant time on this side of the pond and are enjoying meeting Hans family.

It’s a pleasure to host Sunday Stills while you are on vacation. I enjoyed putting this post together and am already working on next week’s challenge. I hope I get to see more coffee-foam creatures.

Have a wonderful vacation. I can’t wait to see all the photos you take.

So much to see in the two days we spend here! Getting good ideas for future photo challenges.
Your foam hippo reminds me of the perfect foam heart I had in my cappuccino today. And yes, I snapped a pic !

Coffee-foam art is something I admire. Such a great skill. But sometimes, the art just appears without trying.

I’d love to know how many photos you take during the holiday. I’m guessing it’ll be more than 500!
