How to Fix Commenting Issues on WordPress Email Notifications: A Simple Solution

If you receive email notifications from WordPress about new blog posts, you might face difficulties leaving comments on certain blogs.

When I attempt to leave a comment, I receive an error message.

The error message.

This issue only impacts comments made when opening posts from email, not those via the WordPress Reader or the bell icon in the notification centre of my blog.

The issue still exists at the time of this post. However, I have found that comments go through when replying to the You can also reply to this email to leave a comment message (see the image below).

Leave your comment via the ‘You can also reply to this email to leave a comment’ link.

You’ll see that it’s like replying to an email rather than leaving a comment on the post, so press the reply button to the email, draft your comment and click the send button. When you check the post, you’ll see your comment unless it’s waiting for approval by the blogger for which you’re leaving the comment.

I recently came across this message. I’m unsure how long it’s been appearing in WordPress emails, whether WordPress has temporarily added it to email notifications to address the issue, or whether it’s a permanent fix. Next time I talk with WordPress, I’ll ask them and update this post.

The important thing is that this method of leaving comments works, so there’s no longer a need to remember to copy comments before submitting them.

Update: See the below response from a staff member at WordPress to me.

An image of a comment from a member of staff at WordPress about the problem involving not be able to leave comments via the WordPress new blog post notification email.
WordPress is working on the problem that is causing some comments to fail.

I inquired with WordPress about whether the text ‘You can also reply to this email to leave a comment at the bottom of their notifications is a recent addition. They confirmed that this specific wording is new; however, the ability to leave comments by replying to emails has been available for a long time.

Update 2

WordPress has now resolved this problem. I’m no longer seeing the error message.

However, if you still get the ‘Sorry, this comment could not be posted’ message when leaving comments, please contact WordPress.

Is this commenting problem affecting you? Please feel free to ask any questions by leaving a comment.

  1. When I get this message on a comment that can’t be saved, I simply reopen the post and input the comment again, it always works the second time. It’s as if there’s a time limit for a reply to be accepted.

    1. It hasn’t always worked for me the second time. That’s why I now reply to the email rather than remember to copy my comment. This new method has not let me down yet.

  2. I have not been able to “like” a comment for other’s posts here on Reader for several days. I can reply and like in my own posts in Reader however.

      1. I’m still having the problem tonight Hugh. Terri (Webster Schrandt) suggested I try using Chrome so I’m going to do that instead of using Edge. I couldn’t view photos on her post … it was a square with nothing in it.

        1. I use Chrome and find it excellent, although, like any internet browser, I have to clear the cache and cookies every now and again to keep it updated and working correctly. I also have it set to download the latest version, again to stop any problems.

        2. Well, I will have to have a second browser then I think Hugh. I’m really not crazy about Edge, especially if it is giving me all these issues. I used Chrome for years, seamlessly, but I’ve read several articles saying that Microsoft is dissuading the use of Chrome for Windows 11, so that is why I hesitated. Bing is not a stellar browser though (in my opinion).

        3. Make sure you have the latest version of whichever browser you use, Linda. And clearout the cache and cookies every now and again too. It all helps.

        4. Okay, thank you for your advice Hugh. I just started using a VPN (through a service, as opposed to a browser), but I don’t think that is the problem as every other internet site has worked well.

  3. I also have been having issues with leaving comments and it can be very frustrating (although it seems to have gotten better lately). I try to remember to copy my comment and, if the error occurs, I go back and paste the comment in again. That seems to work (why? I don’t know) but what a hassle. I’ll try that link next time. Thanks!

    1. It’s certainly a pain having to copy and paste comments, Janis. However, the new method of leaving comments in my posts also works, so you don’t need to remember to copy the comment before submitting it. No more having to remember to copy comments.

  4. I have been asking others about this for weeks because it happens approximately 20% of the time to me, including today. I have gotten better about remembering to save my comments before I post them. The annoying thing is I tend to write more than most, and it’s annoying to retype. When I forget to save, it ALWAYS goes through the second time, but it’s a pain in the butt to have to retype everything.

    1. I agree, but copying a comment before posting it is something many of us are now doing because of the bug causing the problem I mentioned in this post. However, this new method of leaving a comment is also working, so I’m using this new method for now until WordPress do the fix. That way, I don’t need to remember to copy any comments.

  5. …. I went to your post from Colleen – and it is a good thing I copied my reply because the first try – it went ‘belly up’ – So I’ll try again…

Thanks Hugh – I haven’t seen that choice, but I’ll look for it. I generally work from the dashboard All Comments Section and cross ref. with my emails. And only have issues with a few blogs. Sometimes but not always the choice to go to the blog directly, helps.

It is and has always been annoying that WP Bell notifications only old a limited amount of comments (including likes, and replies from others to your comment on their blog – the latter which doesn’t always show up in my email, but generally does show up in the All Comments section… though you may have to go back several pages. And you can reply to comments that way as well – the only issue there is that you also have to go to your document (I always copy my posts from my documents where I write them first and then copy and paste to the blog) – to actually see your own post. And sometimes you do have to go to the actual post to see the reply thread.

We learn to live with such inconveniences. It would just be nice if WP would stop trying to fix what isn’t broken.

    1. I turned off all ‘like’ notifications on my blog, so I don’t get to see any of them, Jules. I’m not particularly interested who has ‘liked’ any of my posts as I know some bloggers and readers press ‘like’ without reading the post. That helps free up the Bell icon, although I don’t tend to use it much. I prefer to respond to comments via my blog’s dashboard and leave comments on blog posts via the WordPress email notification. For me, engaging comments are much more valuable than ‘likes.’

The problem I outlined in this post is the only problem I’m currently experiencing on WordPress. Sometimes, problems are caused my users who continue to use outdated software or themes that are no longer supported by WordPress (that’s just two examples). You may be interested in reading this post I wrote last year as it goes into various problems and how to fix them, although I’m not guaranteeing that anything in the post will help with the problems you are experiencing on your blog.

WordPress Problems: Don’t Panic! How To Solve Issues Quickly

I see it more as WordPress updating their platform to keep up with the ever-evolving technology world rather than fixing things that are not broken. They would lose a lot of users and paying customers if they did not change anything on the platform and keep it updated. While I don’t like all the changes they make, I enjoy the whole WordPress experience, so take note of the changes they make rather than fight them. When they first launched the Block editor, I disliked it, but the more I used it, the more I liked it. That’s just one example, but I’m happy that WordPress do make changes so that I have the latest blogging tools available.

  6. I got this too a few days ago and presumed it was just a one-off thing until someone else commented on it yesterday. Thanks for clearing it up Hugh.

    1. It’s still not fixed, but it’s another way of commenting via WordPress emails without losing the comment, Paul.
WordPress has since informed me that they have an Engineer assigned to deal with the problem. They’ve sent me a link to the ticket so I can see the updates as they happen.

  7. I don’t usually reply via emails, but the problem I’ve had sometimes is the pop up saying I need to sign in to reply when I’m already signed in. I haven’t had that for a couple of days so hopefully it’s sorted

    1. That problems seems to come and go and I have found that it is usually associated with updates being done by WordPress, Cathy. However, users seeing that pop-up all the time need to take action with the device they are using.

      1. I see it only on some blogs, one I was trying this morning wouldn’t let me comment on the blog or Jetpack. It’s very frustrating.

  8. I have not noticed this link when leaving a comment and receiving the error message, Hugh. I’ll keep an eye on it. When I get that error message, I hit the back button, copy my comment, refresh the page, and try again. That often does the trick.

My newest issue leaving comments is that when I accidentally click the back button to delete a mistake and when I click it twice or too fast, the entire paragraph gets deleted. Very annoying.

My newest issue leaving comments is that when I accidentally click the back button to delete a mistake and I click it twice or too fast, the entire paragraph gets deleted. Very annoying. My old issue of not being able to copy the entire comment (WordPress only allows you to copy one paragraph) still exists. As well as the comment not automatically starting with a capital letter and the difficulty of having one paragraph break between paragraph. The gap is always too big. Then I try to delete an empty line and before you know it, my entire paragraph is gone.

    1. I sympathise with you about those problems, Liesbet. I don’t have those problems with my blog, but I know that your blog is self-hosted. Sometimes, bugs can affect WordPress.Com blogs (like mine) and not self-hosted blogs.

I’m not aware of the commenting problem affecting those with self-hosted blogs, but I could be wrong. Anyway, at least WordPress has given us a fix (that seems to work) for now. My fingers are crossed that they get rid of the bug so I can comment on posts I open via their email.

      1. I’m having those problems with every WordPress blog I leave a comment on. Just in my previous comment to you, when I tried to delete an empty line to make the gap between paragraphs smaller, the entire previous paragraph disappeared.

        1. Nope. The “undo” button doesn’t work for that. But this might be an iPad issue. Like I said, it’s all a bit annoying and time consuming. Better to keep my comments short, but you know me… :)

    1. I did try leaving a comment via my desktop this morning by opening the post, but I got that error message. I think the new information in the WordPress email is something they’ve done as a temporary fix, Terri. I do hope they fix the bug that gives that error message, though. I’ll certainly ask them (when they get back to me).

    1. I’m not sure how Feedly works (as I don’t use it), but if the same problem happens there, it may be worth trying to reply to the WordPress new post email notification.

  9. It worked, Hugh! And this is a new feature to address reading posts via email notifications! I am on my phone as I do this. HOORAY! And thank you for using my post as your example!

Because of the comment issue, I would check my email, then hop over to the Reader to find the post. WordPress has worked to get this issue resolved for now.

    1. I hope you don’t mind me using your Wordless Wednesday post as an example, Terri. I know I’ve yet to get to your Sunday Stills post, too.

I’ve used that link several times now, and I’m not getting that error message at all. I go back to the post via the email link, open the post, and can see my comment (sometimes awaiting moderation). All the comments are going through. Somebody at WordPress has also been in touch. I’ll find out more about the link from them and will update this post.

    1. I only noticed the link at the bottom of the WordPress email notification a few days ago, Colleen. I’ve used it several times and it has worked each time. No seeing that error message at all.

Thanks for linking to this post, too.

    1. I agree, Jan. although it only takes a few seconds to copy and paste the comment again, it is rather annoying.
Commenting via this new link seems to work well, though.
