Sometimes, I struggle to find a subscribe or follow button on blogs. I came across one recently where there wasn’t one. I spent ages looking and even left a comment asking how to subscribe to receive more posts, but the host didn’t reply to my comment!

But I’m delighted that WordPress now makes adding a subscribe (to my blog) button to all your posts (past and future) even more effortless. And the best part is that once you switch on this setting, you won’t have to do it again.

Where and how to switch on the Subscribe Block button.

  • On the dashboard of your blog, go to Settings – Newsletter.
  • On the Newsletter settings page, look for ‘Add the Subscribe block at the end of each post,’ and slide the button to the ‘on’ position.

Slide the button to the ‘on’ position.
  • Click the ‘Save Settings’ button.

That’s it! The ‘Subscribe’ block will appear on all of your posts (past and future), making it easy for anyone visiting your blog to follow you.

This is what the block looks like if you’re already subscribed to the blog or have just signed up.

When your post goes out, it says something like, “This post was emailed to 2,100 subscribers.” Is WP actually emailing everyone our posts? Or do they need to subscribe to an outside service?

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, WordPress emails everyone, but only those who have their settings set to receive notifications of new posts via email will get the email. Many users turn that setting off to avoid their email boxes being flooded with emails from WordPress, and use the WordPress Reader instead.

It sounds like you prefer the reader.

No, I’ve never liked the WP Reader. I get email notifications of all new posts from WordPress (except those bloggers who publish more than once a day).

If I get more than one or two emails a day – except from people I’m conversing with, I’m overloaded. I want to keep in touch with them, but I think I need to clean out! I don’t get any except those I have specifically signed up for, and then I’m usually sorry. Others that I want, like yours, I don’t get. I thought I had everything checked. I need to go back and reread your post more carefully. :)

I’m glad you included this post in your “Did You Miss Any of These?” monthly roundup. I had meant to add the subscription block to my blog but forgot. I think my subscribe button was fairly easy to find before, but why not make it even easier? Thanks again for a great tip!

I’m glad these monthly roundup posts help, Janis. Many readers have thanked me for publishing them.

I agree that we must make it easy for visitors to follow or subscribe to our blogs.

Is there a difference between following a blog and subscribing to a blog? I might be imagining it but it seems like on Jetpack on my phone I only see ones I’ve subscribed to rather than followed. Then again, Jetpack could just limit the amount of space it uses. Thanks for any info.

Subscribing tends to get an email notification when a new post is published, whereas with ‘following,’ there’s no email unless you have turned on the option to get notified via email.

        Thanks, Hugh. That helps.
