Apart from updates, the layout of my ‘Meet Hugh’ page hasn’t changed in years. Since it’s one of the most visited pages on my blog, I thought it was time to change it up. However, the thought of what lay ahead meant this job kept falling down my ‘to-do’ list.
Some of you may refer to the page as your ‘About’ page.
What are the top three most viewed pages on your blog?
You may be surprised if you check. I know I was when I discovered that my ‘Meet Hugh’ page is the third most-viewed page on my blog, with over 14,000 views this year alone. And it makes sense why. After all, like any blog, visitors want to know more about the person behind the blog before deciding whether to follow.
Why About Pages Matter
Whenever I come across a blog that publishes the kind of stuff that interests me, I may read a few of their posts first, but I can guarantee I will visit their ‘About’ page before deciding whether to follow. I mean, why wouldn’t anybody do that when they could end up following the blog of someone who may hold views many people frown upon?
Deciding to Revamp the Page
During my August Blog housekeeping break, I did a lot of work behind the scenes of my blog, but when it came to tackling the ‘Meet Hugh’ page, I’d find other things to do. I even cleaned the fruit and vegetable drawers in the fridge to avoid doing the final job I had left. I was too frightened to change the layout, for fear of it all going wrong and not being able to get it back to how it used to look.
Getting AI Suggestions
I decided to ask WordPress’s AI assistant for help and was impressed with what it did. All I did was ask it for suggestions on how to improve the page to make it more engaging and friendly. What I didn’t want it to do was change any of the wording, although it did make some suggestions I liked.
Letting AI Make the Changes
Within a minute of me asking, it came back with lots of suggestions to consider. But what also caught my attention was that it asked whether I wanted it to make any of the changes it had suggested.
At first, I was hesitant to let AI make changes without any involvement beyond the questions I had asked, but since I was already using AI to improve the layout of many of my blog posts, I decided to give it a chance.
What would probably have taken me hours, if not days, to do was done in a few minutes. However, not everything was what I expected.
Reflecting on AI: Fear and Benefits
For starters, AI had not placed some subheadings in the correct places. That was easily fixed, given that with the Block editor you can move entire paragraphs up or down with a click. No more cutting and pasting. But as I was making the changes, I suddenly thought that unless I told AI about the mistakes it had made, it wouldn’t know.
I told it about the mistakes, and after some thought, it came up with a response, realising its mistakes and correcting them. I was impressed, although, at the back of my mind, I did wonder whether I should tell it about the mistakes it had made. But, like anything, if you don’t point out mistakes, then how will whoever made them know?
I did briefly think that the whole experience of using AI to help me redesign my ‘About’ page was rather unsettling, given some of the news I’ve read about it taking over websites. But then I realised it had done a job I probably could not have done without spending days to complete. Not only had AI helped me, but it had also saved me hours — hours that would otherwise have been filled with frustration because things were not working out the way I wanted them to.
But the most important thing AI did for me was remove the fear I felt about changing my blog’s page layout!
I hear and read so much negative stuff about AI, but it does have its advantages on subjects that many of us think are beyond our capabilities.
