Birthday – by Hugh W. Roberts
“Happy 100th Birthday, George. There’s no point hiding. I know you’re in here. Two cards for you. One’s from the Queen; not that she or anyone else knows who you are.”
Closing the door to the cellar, Muriel wondered how long it took for the smell of a decomposing body to disappear.
And, on a happy note, as it’s Sacha’s 30th birthday on Friday, 10th March, here are some friends of Toby who want to sing to her.
Happy Birthday, Sacha.

Those dogs are hilarious!!!! What a wonderfully twisted entry, I do so love your story twists, no one does them better ❤
Aww, thank you. You know how twisted my brain can get when I see a challenge that speaks to me. Hope you had a brilliant day. ❤️
Beautiful post to our gal Sacha! 🙂 xo
I hope she likes it. 😱
No doubt she will! ❤
Cute video, Hugh. And here, from the headline at least, I was hoping it might be your birthday!
Poor George; whatever did he do to deserve burial in the basement? (BTW, have you ever seen the movie Arsenic and Old Lace? I’ve not seen or read the play. Anyway, if you haven’t, you might like it; black humor at one of its heights. And Cary Grant is wonderful as ever in it. And hubba-hubba!)
There was some confusion over my birthday a few weeks ago, Leigh, when Facebook announced it was my birthday. Still no idea how they got it wrong.
I’ve heard of Arsenic and Old Lace, but don’t think I’ve actually seen it. I’ll certainly look out for it.
Hope the foot is getting better. Have a wonderful weekend.
I did see you mention that on Facebook, so I thought it might be related to that but also maybe that it was your real birthday. I don’t ‘see’ you as a Pisces, though! Wishing you guys wonderfulness and wonderment, too.
John’s a Pieces, but I’m a Capricorn. Always walking up a mountain looking for the next story. 😀
Well, then, I’ve already missed your birthday, Hugh. Dang! But a happy one to John whenever it’s up (or already has been).
Sad story, funny video! I watched it twice.LOL! Happy birthday to Sacha!
I’m sure she’ll enjoy it, Terri. I don’t think the Queen will mind me sharing her birthday video with Sacha. After all, she’s Queen of the Bloggers Bash.
Wow, Hugh. Another one on the dark side of life. Steven King is watching. Ha ha! I’m glad that you ended on a happy note with the wonderful doggy video. ❤
I hope he is, Olga 😀
The Corgis seem to be a big hit. I’m sure Sacha will enjoy their voices.
Another brilliant flash piece, Hugh.
I LOVED the video as well!
Thanks, Donna. Those corgis seem more popular than the flash, but I’m glad everyone is enjoying watching them.
This was great Hugh! I’ve joined in for the first time with a true story. Hopefully that’s allowed 🙂
I’m sure it is Deb. Thanks for joining in with the challenge. It’s tough to do with only 52 words being allowed, but I hope you have fun with it.
😂 Only the Queen knows who he is! Love it😂
Thank you. 😀
Trust you to add such a gruesome twist at the end of the story, Hugh! I enjoyed it though!!
What a great video, those dog are so well trained! 🙂
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Judy. Sacha brings out the dark side of my writing. 😈
I think she does that to a lot of us!! 🤣🤣🤣
LOL…what a video!
Isn’t it great, Robert? I’ve used it a few times when wishing friends a Happy Birthday.
I’ve seen some of the best pet videos since joining Facebook and Twitter. My Birthday…11/10…(hint)
Great flash piece, Hugh. You always come up with something original 🙂 The Corgi song made me laugh out loud. I was wondering when the little one on the right was going to get into the act. Adorable.
Isn’t it, Diana? I do wonder how long it took to put together. Must have taken ages.
Thanks for the thumbs up on the flash fiction. Sacha seems to always bring out the best in my writing. But, don’t her that, as she’ll want paying. 😀
This had me think about my grandma, who I hoped would turn 100 for real one day. Unfortunately, she passed away last week at 96. We recently pet sat a hound and he would “sing” (howl) happy birthday with us. It was very funny!
I’m sorry about your loss, Liesbet.
I’m always amazed by what dogs pick up and sing to. Toby, my dog, does howl, but only while he’s sleeping. It can be quite disturbing in the middle of the night.
Marvelous, Hugh. Have a thriving Thursday! Mega hugs.
You too, Teagan. Every Thursday is thriving for me. 😀
Hugs to you.
Poor George! 🙂 What a cute video! Those dogs are very well trained- especially the little guy at the end who just sits there waiting for his turn to sing.
I just wonder how long it took to put together. I’ve used it a few times to wish various people a Happy Birthday.
It took a lot of patience- that’s for sure!
Birthday decomp….only from you, Hugh. Short and sweet ???
Ah, I should have mentioned the birthday cake Muriel had baked, Van. 🎂
That, Hugh, takes the biscuit!
The whole tin, I hope, Jane. Thanks. 😀
Groan……….. lol.. 🙂 haha… too many cellar stories in the news for real lately Hugh..
Hope you have a great day, and a clever piece of writing.. 🙂
Thanks, Sue. The sun is shining and I smell spring in the air. 🌷
Yes we have been in the home garden today.. Lawns were cut.. They were getting very long..
Oh poor George! But such a cute video!
Isn’t it? I wonder how long it took to put together?
I love things like that!!!
