Birthday #writespiration #flashfiction

Sacha Black challenges us to write something with ‘The Big Birthday’ theme using just 52 words (no more, no less).

52 Weeks: 52 Words Writespiration 2017

Birthday – by Hugh W. Roberts

“Happy 100th Birthday, George. There’s no point hiding. I know you’re in here. Two cards for you. One’s from the Queen; not that she or anyone else knows who you are.”

Closing the door to the cellar, Muriel wondered how long it took for the smell of a decomposing body to disappear.

And, on a happy note,  as it’s Sacha’s 30th birthday on Friday, 10th March, here are some friends of Toby who want to sing to her.

Happy Birthday, Sacha.

  1. Cute video, Hugh. And here, from the headline at least, I was hoping it might be your birthday!
Poor George; whatever did he do to deserve burial in the basement? (BTW, have you ever seen the movie Arsenic and Old Lace? I’ve not seen or read the play. Anyway, if you haven’t, you might like it; black humor at one of its heights. And Cary Grant is wonderful as ever in it. And hubba-hubba!)

    1. There was some confusion over my birthday a few weeks ago, Leigh, when Facebook announced it was my birthday. Still no idea how they got it wrong.

I’ve heard of Arsenic and Old Lace, but don’t think I’ve actually seen it. I’ll certainly look out for it.

Hope the foot is getting better. Have a wonderful weekend.

      1. I did see you mention that on Facebook, so I thought it might be related to that but also maybe that it was your real birthday. I don’t ‘see’ you as a Pisces, though! Wishing you guys wonderfulness and wonderment, too.

  2. Wow, Hugh. Another one on the dark side of life. Steven King is watching. Ha ha! I’m glad that you ended on a happy note with the wonderful doggy video. ❤

  3. Great flash piece, Hugh. You always come up with something original 🙂 The Corgi song made me laugh out loud. I was wondering when the little one on the right was going to get into the act. Adorable.

    1. Isn’t it, Diana? I do wonder how long it took to put together. Must have taken ages.
Thanks for the thumbs up on the flash fiction. Sacha seems to always bring out the best in my writing. But, don’t her that, as she’ll want paying. 😀

  4. This had me think about my grandma, who I hoped would turn 100 for real one day. Unfortunately, she passed away last week at 96. We recently pet sat a hound and he would “sing” (howl) happy birthday with us. It was very funny!

    1. I’m sorry about your loss, Liesbet.
I’m always amazed by what dogs pick up and sing to. Toby, my dog, does howl, but only while he’s sleeping. It can be quite disturbing in the middle of the night.

  5. Poor George! 🙂 What a cute video! Those dogs are very well trained- especially the little guy at the end who just sits there waiting for his turn to sing.
