Taking Stock: 26 Little Snapshots of My Life and the Blogging World

Taking Stock‘ is a fun, clever way to capture what’s happening in your life right now, using each letter of the alphabet as a prompt. I’m not sure how long this idea has been around, but when I read Debbie’s post on her blog, Deb’s World, it instantly caught my imagination, and I knew I had to give it a try myself.

In her latest ‘Taking Stock’ post, Debbie says she likes to pause every few months to take stock of the little things in her life, as they are sometimes the best bits. I agree!

To answer the prompts, she likes to give herself a few moments to process the words and avoid overthinking them. She then finds suitable photos to add. Debbie does these posts every 3-4 months.

Here goes – my first ‘Taking Stock’ post.

Believing in myself: Because of my dyslexia, I don’t usually accept beta-reading offers. But when Marsha Ingrao told me her book was about blogging, I jumped at the chance to beta-read it. It boosted my confidence big time. Thank you, Marsha.

Curious by: I’ve seen some great cloud formations recently. I love that all my photos and information are stored in the clouds. But what happens when it rains?

A wide grassy field bordered by tall trees under a dramatic sky filled with scattered cloud patterns and large white clouds. A few houses are visible in the distance.
Is this where all my photos are stored?

Decluttering: I love decluttering and have been doing a lot of it over the last few months. It leaves me feeling calm and positive. And look at all that free space! Wow! Not even my blog has escaped. Do you enjoy decluttering?

Screenshot of the WordPress Posts dashboard showing links for All, Published, Drafts, and Trash posts. The “Trash (115)” section is highlighted with a red rectangle.

Excited by: It’s that time of year again. The Eurovision Song Contest takes place on 16 May in Vienna. I’m not sure about the United Kingdom’s entry this year. It’s different, and different can deliver good results, but how many points would you give it?

Flabbergasted: I’ve finally convinced myself I don’t need to keep up with fashion trends after seeing this. How do they sit down in some of those outfits?

Grateful for outdoor space. I’m not green-fingered. Thankfully, I have a partner who is.

A colourful garden border filled with blooming shrubs and flowers in shades of red, white, pink, yellow, and purple beside a neatly mowed lawn and a wooden fence.

Horrified by the recent election results in parts of the UK. What on earth is going on? Some parts of society seem to want to go back to the 1930s.

Ironing: My best ideas for blog posts and flash fiction come to me when I’m standing in front of an ironing board. That’s why I enjoy ironing. Where do you get your best ideas?

Juggling time between blogging and life can be difficult. I see bloggers struggling with it all the time. Finding the perfect balance can be challenging, but it can be done. Step back, and you’ll soon see how to do it.

Kindness: This quote struck a chord when I saw it on Bluesky recently. If only all humans were like this. Please be kind to one another.

Listening to music, I used to play when I was a DJ in various pubs and nightclubs in London, where I loved filling dance floors. It was an achievement I loved. Now, some of that music helps me write. Do you have a music playlist?

Mood: I’ve always been a positive person. The glass is always half full. Don’t let others drag you down with their negativity. They aren’t worth your time.

Noticing: The nights. They are getting much shorter in the UK. On June 21st, the sun doesn’t set where I live until 21:37, so we will have over 18 hours of daylight. I still find it strange to go to bed when it’s not pitch dark.

Ordering less online: It’s convenient, but when I do go to the local high street and see how many shops are vacant, it makes me feel that I have been part of the problem. Support your local high street shops.

Puzzled by: I’m still trying to work out why WordPress changed the name of ‘Reusable Blocks’ to ‘Patterns’. It doesn’t make sense. If you’re still using the Classic editor, you won’t have any idea what I’m talking about.

Questioning bloggers: I’m delighted with the response to the questions I asked in my previous post. The main question was ‘How often should you publish blog posts?’ The responses make interesting reading and have many bloggers thinking. Why not join them?

Reading: I’m reading my first book of 2026. Dyslexia means I prefer to watch rather than read, but this book has sparked my interest, especially when I spotted myself on the front cover. It’s non-fiction, fascinating, with some humour thrown in. What are you reading?

A booklet titled “Crickhowell High Street Across the Decades” lying on a wooden surface. The black cover features white text and a sepia-toned historic photograph of a crowded street scene with men, women, and children gathered outside old shopfronts and the Bear Hotel. Beneath the title, the cover reads: “A Guided Tour with Ryland Wallace, John Webb and Chris Lewis.”

Still pleased that I started cutting my own hair in 2013. The hair clippers cost me £49.99. When a barber last cut my hair that year, it cost £7.50. Now that’s what I call a satisfying cost saving. Do you cut your own hair?

Thankful to be able to smile again after having two front teeth replaced with implants. The two offending teeth were removed last July. It’s been a long wait for the bone to fill the gaps and grow around the implant sockets. Now I can share smiles with others again.

Understanding that not everyone will agree with me. But please try to disagree in a professional and friendly manner.

Very thankful that bloggers continue to share my blog posts. Whether it’s on social media, by linking to one of my posts, or simply by mentioning me by name, I’m always delighted when people tell me that reading one of my posts has helped.

Wondering how I won a pair of boxer shorts in a competition I entered to win a year’s supply of teabags. But I guess I should be pleased to have won something. Have you won anything recently?

eXtra special: Yeah, I cheated here, as I couldn’t think of anything that begins with the letter X. As Debbie says in her post, ‘don’t overthink it!’ So here’s a photo of Austin, who is eXtra special to me.

A small corgi standing on wet sand at the edge of a beach during low light, with gentle waves rolling in behind it. The dog is holding a red ball in its mouth, its tail curled upward, and pawprints and scattered shells are visible in the sand nearby.

Yearning for you to read my latest story for the Story Chat feature on Marsha’s blog. Honestly, it’s very different from what I usually write and from the other stories I’ve written for Story Chat. It goes live in September.

Zooming in on how good it is to be part of the writing world, given that I have dyslexia. Your support and encouragement have been a big part of the journey. Thank you!

As you can see, this little “Taking Stock” exercise has given me plenty to think about, smile about, and even scratch my head over. I’d love to hear how life is looking from where you are right now. Which of my answers resonated with you most? If you picked just one prompt from this list—Admiring, Believing, Decluttering, Grateful, Wondering, or any of the others, what would your answer be today?

My thanks to Debbie at Deb’s World for the inspiration to write this post.

Wow! Hugh, I feel your new theme has given you new inspiration, and your blog a new life. I think most countries are dealing with bad politics, and getting inspiration while ironing is unique, IMHO. I get my inspiration listening to music, and enjoying nature. Which, by the way, your partner has a superb green thumb, and those flowers are lovely. You seem to compliment each other with your creativity. I enjoyed learning more about you, and your ‘Taking Stock’ post is a great idea.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Change always inspires me, Eugi. I also like that I can draft new posts using the themes template, so I can see how everything looks. I still preview posts before publishing, but having the template is so helpful. Those still using Classic themes are missing out on so much.

I’m glad you enjoyed this post. It’s not often I talk about myself (other than on my ‘About’ page), so ‘Taking Stock’ seemed the perfect feature to change that. I’ll certainly do more of these posts, but keep it to three or four a year.

I’ve always been a fan of an A-Z post, Hugh, and your ‘Taking Stock’ was an enjoyable read. Thank you for sharing some snapshots of your life. I love Austin! I grew up with two Pembroke corgis who were great characters. I’ve written the occasional A-Z post, but they’ve been very factual. I think I might attempt a Taking Stock post, in the future.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

This ‘Taking Stock’ post was fun to do, June. Feel free to link back if you do write a ‘Taking Stock’ post.

Even here in Wales, you don’t see many corgis. They became popular again in 2012 when The Queen had her Diamond Jubilee. Austin is a Cardigan Corgi, sadly now on the vulnerable breeds list. They make wonderful pets, plus you get a lot of attention when out on walks with them. Austin enjoys all the attention, especially when treats are involved.

I find when I take stock, it’s the little things that speak the loudest and can make all the difference in the world. Very well done.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you. Those little things can often be the difference between getting things done and living a stagnant life.

      1. Tails Around the Ranch avatar

You’re so right. I believe it’s the little things that create the feeling of being overwhelmed.

  4. JT Twissel avatar

I will definitely check out your story! I love the picture of Austin. So cute. I’m also de-cluttering which, on top of all else, is making it hard to keep up with writing and blogging!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I hope you are getting all the positive feelings I have when decluttering, Jan. I tend to do mine in bits. So, I’ll write for an hour, then declutter for 30 minutes, before going back to writing. I don’t write every day, though.

      1. JT Twissel avatar

I agree – de-cluttering is best done in bits otherwise it can be depressing!

  5. Linda Schaub avatar

Hugh – your partner has the magic touch for flowers – see, you are both creative in your own ways.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thanks, Linda. I think that may be why we’ve been together for 33 years (and counting).

      1. Linda Schaub avatar

You’re welcome Hugh – that is a long time, but you obviously are a perfect match, something many couples may strive for, but never attain.

  6. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

This is a fun post to see the lighter side of you, Hugh! Did you think of the words yourself or doe the prompt provide them? I enjoyed reading this!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I used some of the words Debbie used in her post, but I think the aim is for us to use our own words, Terri. Any words that come to us that link to a small bit of our current lives. Debbie used X-factor moment for X, but I could not think of any word that begins with X, so I cheated with the word I used.

Glad you enjoyed the read. The post seems to have been a hit with readers.

  7. Colleen Chesebro avatar

This was such a fun post, Hugh. It was fun to learn more about you. The politics of the world is insane right now. It breaks my heart.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

We are in turbulent times, Colleen. But those of us who sail kind and positive ships will come through the storm.

Wow Hugh, this new block editor has certainly given you a new lease of blogging life! You can really feel the joy in your post!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m glad it comes through, Paul. Although the ‘glass half full’ I mentioned may also have something to do with it.

  9. Author Jan Sikes avatar

What a fun exercise, Hugh. I have to agree about the letter X. As I read I was trying to think of one. No results. Thank you for sharing. This is something we could all do. Great reflection.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I think it’s a great feature to do, Jan. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.

‘X’ is a hard letter to think of something to write about. But, as Debbie said in her post, don’t overthink it. Enjoy!

  10. Ruth avatar

Oh, I love this idea, Hugh – what fun! I might have to try an alphabetical ‘taking stock’ post myself :-)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Please do, Ruth. I had a lot of fun writing the post. It made me think, but not too much. Feel free to link back to mine or Debbie’s Taking Stocking’ post.

  11. dgkaye avatar

Hi Hugh, this was a fun post, a fun way to take stock. Thanks for the mention, a pleasure to share. 😊

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You’re welcome, Debby, and glad you enjoyed the post. It was fun to do.

  12. beth avatar

a fun read, and great inspiration – don’t think i’d be good at cutting my own hair, i tried my bangs once and it was quite a disaster )

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I recall all the haircut disasters during the pandemic, when hairdressers and barbershops were closed during the lockdowns. Hair-clippers became very popular, and online shops sold out of them within days.

  13. wrookieschu avatar

Great post Hugh and love this idea. I’m looking forward to Eurovision this year and funny enough I was just watching the Australian entry this evening, which I actually quite like, not too sure about the UK, very different. Also watching the news I am equally shocked and not shocked at the same time with how well Farage is doing, it’s like Brexit all over again. I just see the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer, blame being placed on migrants.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thanks, Wayne. I love the idea behind the ‘Taking Stock’ feature.

I heard the Australian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time this morning. I liked it and heard it’s one of the favourites. I also heard that Delta Goodrem will wear a crystal dress when singing the song. It sounds exactly like what Eurovision is all about now.

The political landscape in England is heading down a dark path. Thank goodness that in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we have devolved governments. However, if there were a general election today, the whole of the UK would be plunged into a country full of division and hate. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen in 2029 (when the next General Election is due).

      1. wrookieschu avatar

Couldn’t agree more, really hoping things can improve. If Australia win Eurovision, I may have to attend next year if it comes to Australia!

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I hope it does, although the time difference may have other ideas, unless it’s broadcast in the early hours of the morning in Sydney. I recall reading (somewhere) that the final always has to start at 20:00 UK time.

          1. Debbie avatar

I must look up Delta’s song now! Go Australia :)

            1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

It’s a great song, Debbie. And the outfit she is wearing for the contest is out of this world.

Congrats Hugh! What a great Taking Stock post, especially for your first ever one. I really enjoyed your prompts and answers. Who knew ironing could be used to spark ideas for blog posts? You’re very creative.

Thanks so much for the mention and I’m thrilled you took up the challenge. I enjoy doing these posts as I get to cover so many topics and readers get a glimpse into my thought processes and life. Well done on winning the boxer shorts, I think I would have preferred the tea bags 😂

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Debbie, I’m taking this comment as coming from you? It certainly sounds like it.

Thank you for the inspiration to have a go at ‘Taking Stock.’ I enjoyed drafting the post and sharing what’s going on. It’s a great idea.

The boxer shorts will come in handy, especially for sleeping in during too-warm summer nights. I don’t think they’ll need ironing, though.

      1. Debbie avatar

Yes Hugh this was my comment!!! I think I was on my iPad when I wrote it so it may not have logged me in! I’m so glad you enjoyed the process and your readers have obviously enjoyed your post too. It’s always amazing how much we can fit into these posts and it helps share our personality a bit in our responses to the prompts. I like spreading these posts out during the year so as not to overdo them, if you know what I mean. Great post!

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I thought it was you, Debbie. I’ve set my blog settings so readers don’t have to be logged in to leave comments; hence, if you’re not logged in, it will appear as anonymous. I do this as some readers like to remain anonymous.

I’m so pleased I read your ‘Taking Stock’ post. I don’t know how long you have been doing them, but it’s a great feature. Like you, I think three or four of these posts spread throughout the year works best. Too many, as things may not have changed much.

  15. Dean Sas avatar

Still pleased that I started cutting my own hair in 2013. The hair clippers cost me £49.99. When a barber last cut my hair that year, it cost £7.50. Now that’s what I call a satisfying cost saving. Do you cut your own hair?

I’m on my second set of clippers since 2003. It’s cheap, convenient and usually just as good!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’ve still got my first set, Dean. Although I have changed the blade a few times. They came in very handy during the pandemic, when barbershops were closed during lockdowns.

      1. Dean Sas avatar

Yeah, it was nice to have at least one bit of normality during those days!

My first clippers required plugging in, but were still going strong from 2003 → 2021. I upgraded because I was given some battery-powered ones, hopefully I’ll get decades longer out of these!

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I hope so, Dean. What are the make and model of the upgraded ones? The ones I currently use have to be charged up after every use, but they are wireless.

          1. Dean Sas avatar

They’re Ufree U-1257. I’m not sure how many uses I get per charge, quite a few though!

            1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you. Not a make I have heard of before. I checked, and although available in the UK, not many places stock them.
