Sometimes, I struggle to find a subscribe or follow button on blogs. I came across one recently where there wasn’t one. I spent ages looking and even left a comment asking how to subscribe to receive more posts, but the host didn’t reply to my comment!

But I’m delighted that WordPress now makes adding a subscribe (to my blog) button to all your posts (past and future) even more effortless. And the best part is that once you switch on this setting, you won’t have to do it again.

Is it easy for visitors to follow your blog?

Where and how to switch on the Subscribe Block button.

  • On the dashboard of your blog, go to Settings – Newsletter.
  • On the Newsletter settings page, look for ‘Add the Subscribe block at the end of each post,’ and slide the button to the ‘on’ position.

Slide the button to the ‘on’ position.
  • Click the ‘Save Settings’ button.

That’s it! The ‘Subscribe’ block will appear on all of your posts (past and future), making it easy for anyone visiting your blog to follow you.

This is what the block looks like if you’re already subscribed to the blog or have just signed up.

Done! Thanks so much. I don’t use the newsletter feature so I never thought to look at those settings.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Same here. I wonder why that setting is under Newsletter, so they may move it.

  2. V.M.Sang avatar

Wow! As easy as that? I’m going to do it immediately.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, as easy as that. Once that setting is switched on, there will be no more worrying about visitors being unable to find a subscribe button.

  3. Brenda's Thoughts avatar

Well, that was very helpful. Thanks!!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You’re welcome, Brenda. I’m glad it helped.

Thanks for this useful reminder, Hugh. I was under the impression that the subscribe button was already in place on my blog but it turns out it wasn’t. It is now!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

The subscribe/follow button can be hard to find on many blogs, June. Turing on this setting sorts that problem out.

  5. Michelle (Boomer Eco Crusader) avatar

Great tip, Hugh. I manually add the subscribe block to all my posts but it seems I don’t have to!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

No, not anymore, Michelle. Turning on this setting takes care of it for you.

  6. Michael avatar

Wow Hugh! This was such a helpful post. There are so many things on WordPress in which I have no idea that they even exist. Thank you so much for letting us all know about this easy feature! I just added it to my blog.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s great to hear, Michael. You’re right about WordPress. It has so many excellent features, and I enjoy finding them.

      1. Michael avatar

And I so appreciate you passing along what you find!

  7. Erika avatar

What would we do without you, Hught? Thanks for this input. I just fixed it.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Good to hear, Erika. You’re welcome.

  8. Colleen Chesebro avatar

Thanks, Hugh! This was a great tip. Much appreciated.

      Always a pleasure, Colleen.

Oh I like this idea. I hate that the button I created can only be added on the website, not through the Jetpack app. I’ll definitely be looking at this before I share my next post

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

      Glad it’s been helpful, Brenda.

No need to thank me, Jan. It’s always a pleasure.

Hugh, you diamond geezer you! I’ve just done it and it looks so much easier to subscribe now. It doesn’t mean people will but it is far more likely than it was ten minutes ago!

Now all I have to do is start posting!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m glad it helped, Paul. Unless you had a subscribe button in the widget bar on your blog or you saw the ‘follow’ link when scrolling up on a page of a blog, you’ll have missed it. This block makes it so much easier to now subscribe or follow.

    That was easy! Thanks.

It’s a section of Settings I’ve never opened before.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You’re welcome. Check out the other settings while there, especially the ones about pop-ups appearing on your blog. Lots of bloggers, including me, dislike pop-ups, so turn them off if you feel the same way about pop-ups.

I didn’t realise this so thank you for pointing it out, Hugh. I just assumed it was there for everyone, but I have often struggled to subscribe to others’ blogs. It’s so easy to change too!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Many WordPress blogs have a follow button that becomes visible, but only when you’re scrolling up the page of the blog, Esther. It’s easy to miss when scrolling. This new setting ensures it’s easy for visitors to subscribe or follow a blog. I see you’ve already implemented it on your blog.

      1. Esther Chilton avatar

You’re right about the follow button – very easy to miss when scrolling. I always find your blogs so useful, Hugh. Thank you for taking the time to help us.

  14. AM avatar

I think I have that setting on, but I have to double check. No matter what I know that I have a subscribe button there.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Good to hear, but is it visible and easy to find?

      1. AM avatar

I hadn’t really thought of that. I go through the menus a lot. In self-hosted WordPress it’s easier I think to find every setting. On WordPress.com – not so much 😝.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

          I’ve never had a self-hosted blog so I can’t comment on that.

  15. masgautsen avatar

Thank you for the good advice. A very easy, but important thing to fix

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Certainly a fix if you don’t have a subscribe/follow button that’s easy to find.
