WordPress Achievements: Unlock Secret Badges and Activity Streak Rewards

Introduction to WordPress Achievements and Badges

Have you noticed any WordPress achievement notifications popping up on your blog lately?

From secret badges to impressive activity streaks, WordPress now rewards bloggers for showing up, creating content, and staying consistent. But how do these achievements work, and what do you need to do to unlock them?

What WordPress Achievements and Badges Are

Here’s a screenshot of some of the achievement notifications I’ve earned on WordPress recently.

Screenshot of a WordPress.com achievements page displaying several unlocked badges in a grid layout. The badges include “Years of Service” for 12 years on WordPress.com, “Time Traveler,” “Globe Trotter,” “World Domination,” “Perfectionist,” “Conversation Starter,” “Anniversary,” “Posts Level 1,” “Likes Level 200,” and “Follows Level 1337.” Each badge features a colourful circular icon with short descriptions and unlock dates beneath the titles.

There are lots of achievement awards available. Although there are no plans to add more, Dean Sas, who works for Automattic on WordPress.Com, and his team, who all came up with the idea, told me that they’d like to add more every so often.

Screenshot showing two achievement notifications on a light grey background. The top notification features a blue circular icon with a map and trophy badge alongside the text, “Achievement unlocked: World Domination.” The lower notification features a purple circular icon with a globe and trophy badge alongside the text, “Achievement unlocked: Globe Trotter.” Both achievements are displayed in a stacked list format.

Secret Badges and How to Unlock Them

Some of the achievements are secret, meaning you won’t know how to earn them, which I think adds to the fun. I recently unlocked and earned one of the secret awards after editing a post that was more than five years old. Why was I editing a post that was more than five years old? Well, we all do that, don’t we? After all, blog posts need updating, especially those that continue to receive lots of traffic.

An achievement notification banner on a light blue background. On the left, there is an orange circular badge containing a blue square with a white rewind symbol (two triangles pointing left). A smaller blue circle with a white trophy icon overlaps the bottom right of the main badge. To the right of the badges, the dark text reads, "Achievement unlocked: Time Traveler".

Tracking Your WordPress Activity Streaks

Another fun feature is the ‘Activity Streak.’ The more you log on and use WordPress, the longer your activity streak. You can also earn a freeze on your activity streak so you don’t break it.

Screenshot of an achievement-style notification on a light grey background. A blue circular badge icon featuring an ice cube appears on the left, with a small information symbol attached to the badge. To the right, the message reads: “You earned an activity streak freeze.”

So, if you aren’t able to log in one day, no fear, as the freeze you earned protects the streak.

A WordPress.com activity streak dashboard showing a 13-day streak. On the left, a large circular orange badge displays the number "13" in red, with small flame icons at the top and bottom and the text "You're on fire!" underneath. The main text reads, "Activity Streak: Congrats on using WordPress.com for 13 days in a row! It's your longest streak so far!" Below this text, a medal icon shows "13 days," an ice cube icon shows "1 available," and a weekly row from Tuesday to Monday shows a flame emoji under each day.

As you can see, I’m on fire!

Privacy Settings for Your WordPress Badges

Your Achievements page is private by default. If you want to share it, you can make it visible to other logged-in WordPress.com users by toggling the settings in the top-right corner of the Activity Steak block.

Where can you find your WordPress achievements?

Like a lot of other interesting features, you can find the achievement page for you and your blog by clicking the ‘Reader‘ icon, then clicking ‘Reader Profile‘ (at the bottom of the left-hand menu), and finally the ‘Achievements’ tab.

Give it a go and see what achievements you have already earned. You may be surprised.

You will also see all the locked achievements waiting for you to open and earn. How many can you unlock?

To display your achievements in a post or on social media, copy and paste the URL of your achievement page.

New Notifications

I’ve also noticed these new notifications popping up in my blog every day.

A WordPress "On This Day" memory card showing one post from June 1, 2021. At the top is a circular golden badge featuring a stylized blue cassette tape with the text "TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS" on its label. Below, text reads: "On This Day. You have 1 post from this day, June 1. ☀️ 2021." The specific post title is listed as "Murder In Picnic Wood #flashfiction," with links to "View" and "Reblog."

Quite a nice touch, as I can revisit the post to update, share, or repost it. Thank you WordPress.

Have you earned any WordPress achievements? If so, which ones? Have you been receiving WordPress achievement notifications? What do you think of the idea?

I’ve been having fun reading them Hugh – admittedly at first I thought they were spam though. :)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I got my first notification via email and checked that it was genuine. Then I saw the announcement from WordPress. Glad you’re having fun with them, Linda. That’s what it is all about.

      1. Linda Schaub avatar

I got two or three the first day and two more the second day, all in my Notifications area, so I e-mailed WP with a screenshot and asked if they were legitimate before I opened them. It’s good to be cautious Hugh, but, yes, it is something fun.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I agree about being cautious, especially when online, Linda. The scammers are getting better at trying to scam us these days. And now, with AI, some of those scams can look genuine.

          1. Linda Schaub avatar

The AI stuff is amazing now Hugh. We have to be on our toes constantly!

  2. Author Jan Sikes avatar

Interesting. There are always changes. I will have to keep a watch for achievements. Thanks for sharing, Hugh!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You’re welcome. Changes are good, as they keep us on our toes and help keep us up to date with a changing world.

i like the ‘on this day’ option, it kind of reminds me to look back

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Absolutely. We all have treasure buried in our blog archives and should make more use of it.

I’ve gotten the oddly named World Domination and a few Activity Streaks – I thought it was bizarre as I don’t post that regularly. Thanks for the explanation! I think bloggers always appreciate incentives

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You don’t need to post every day to keep your activity streak going. Leaving or replying to a comment, reading a post and clicking the like button also count. As do other activities.

I agree that most bloggers appreciate incentives, but you’ll always get a few who complain about them. I saw one this morning who complained that she didn’t sign up for them, nor did she want them, as she thought they were pointless. There’s no pleasing everybody.

I’ve seen these showing up. They’re fun but do they really mean anything? 🤣😎🙃

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I think they help incentivise many bloggers, especially those who struggle to write a post or engage with other bloggers.

  6. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

These are fun and I noticed them on my jetpack app a few days ago, Hugh! I went into the achievements tab and saw two very old achievements from 2013 and 2014. I also like the On This Day feature and I may try to share one of those soon.

It would be nice to have a menu or widget to display them on our sidebars. Thanks for sharing this and the how-tos! Happy first day of June!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m sure displaying some of these achievements in a widget or sidebar is possible, Terri. I’ve seen lots of bloggers share them on social media. They’re great fun and help to incentivise bloggers.

      1. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

Yesterday I received the prompt for a post from one year ago, which i shared to Facebook. It was timely because it was for “June is Outdoor Month.” What WordPress is doing is reigniting interest in blogging for personal blogs. Many bloggers have made farewell posts lately. 😞

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I agree about the reigniting of interest for personal bloggers, Terri. I’ve had some reminders which took me to flash fiction I’d forgotten about. But that only told me that what I had written had not stuck and needs adjusting to make the story memorable. But that’s good because it means I have some new stories to tell, even if harvested from older stories that didn’t make the cut.

I haven’t seen any farewell posts from bloggers. Hopefully, not from bloggers I know. I hope the reasons for leaving are good, rather than leaving because they don’t want to adapt to the changes that we all must embrace in an ever-changing world. Standing still isn’t good for any of us, but I know you already know that, especially after changing your blog’s theme.

          1. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

Donna from Canada and Suzanne from Florida post their farewells. I follow them on Facebook.
For writers and photographers, blogging is a wonderful and supportive forum. Social media is too clicque-y for photography. I gave up on sharing on Bluesky. I’m involved with two book projects and plan to share via WordPress. I always appreciate your support and friendship, Hugh and your helpful posts!

            1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I don’t use Facebook, so I was unaware they had left, Terri. Hopefully, they left for good reasons and left with lots of smiles and fulfilment. I hope so.

I’m getting lots of traffic from the fediverse, and now (another new feature from WordPress), I can use BlueSky and Mastodon on WordPress.

  7. ganga1996 avatar

I like the flash back notification!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I like them, too. They help bring up older posts and give them another chance. All too often, older posts get forgotten about. And we all have treasure in our blog archives.

  8. Shahbaz Ashraf avatar

I have been blogging for the past three or so years, but haven’t been that regular due to my banking job. But, I’ve learnt a great deal from your blog.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you, Shahbaz. I’m delighted when people share feedback. It makes what I do even more special.

  9. Michelle (Boomer Eco Crusader) avatar

I think the new achievements are kind of fun, but I likely won’t change my behaviour to earn them.

Now, if only I could find them on the Jetpack app…

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m sure they are there somewhere, Michelle. I’ll let you know if I find them.

      1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Hi Michelle, here’s how to find WordPress Achievements on the Jetpack app –

In the Jetpack app, tap Reader in the bottom navigation bar, then tap Reader Profile in the left sidebar, and tap the Achievements tab.

  10. Shahbaz Ashraf avatar

Thanks, Hugh. You have always been an inspiration for the new bloggers. Stay blessed.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s very kind, thank you, Shahbaz. How long have you been blogging?

  11. Shahbaz Ashraf avatar

This achievement tab is a good addition by WP, and appears to be quite interesting as well. I have noticed it very recently. I got a few badges like Year of Service, Daily Post Streak, Globe Trotter, Social Butterfly, etc.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Congratulations on getting those achievement badges, Shahbaz. I don’t have the social butterfly one yet.

I agree; this is a great new addition from WordPress. It’s a great idea.

  12. Esther Chilton avatar

I had no idea these existed, Hugh. And it was having a play around with my blog last week that led to me unlocking some of them. It’s been great fun. Thanks for sharing this with us all.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

These badges are fairly new, Esther. There are lots to collect. It certainly adds some fun to being a part of WordPress. Keep unlocking them.

  13. Paul Ariss avatar

    It’s just sent me a Perfectionist Award. I think it’s being ironic…

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s one of the secret awards, Paul. It’s when you edit a particular post over and over again. Well done!

  14. wrookieschu avatar

Wow there has been a lot of reposts here Hugh. It’s a great post in fairness and a topic that I have thought about also. I actually really enjoy the notifications that seem to have popped up over the last couple of weeks. I even just got a new one today for following 100 blogs in the reader. It’s a bit of fun and reminds us how well we’re doing.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Since joining the Fediverse, I’ve been getting lots more reports and visitors, Wayne.

Well done on that new achievement. I wonder if it was a ‘secret’ one, as there are many of them.

Yes, I agree; this new feature is all a bit of fun and adds to the enjoyment of blogging. It’s great to be told how well we are doing.

      1. wrookieschu avatar

I love it Hugh. I just received another one this morning.

          1. wrookieschu avatar

            Many thanks Hugh. Small wins.

            1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

              Lead to big wins, Wayne.

  15. Michael avatar

I noticed the changes a couple of days ago when I logged in. I really like the “On This Day” feature as it is fun to go back and reread posts made in the past. Enjoy your week!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I like that feature too, Michael. I don’t know how many bloggers never go back to their older posts, but this new notification certainly helps them revisit them.
