Flash Fiction – Gold

Gold – by Hugh W. Roberts

Heading up the dusty trail, a nine-gallon cowboy hat adorned his head while he wobbled around in spurred boots one size too big; Barry remembered the words of his now-deceased bachelor uncle.

‘The trail leads to gold.’

But where was the gold? There was no gold here, just dust, some of which was dirtying his new boots and making him sneeze.

Just as he was about to give up, a building with flashing signage appeared in the distance where the trail ended. As he walked nearer, he could make out its name – ‘Dusty’s.’

Barry’s heart leapt when he opened the venue’s doors, releasing butterflies into his stomach. A brightly-lit room full of music and cowboys, all line dancing together.

He’d struck gold.

His uncle had invaluable knowledge about Barry’s path. Perhaps that treasured venue was at the end of rainbow?

Fun flash, Hugh, with your classic twist.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Nicely put, D! I’m sure Barry found his pot of gold.

I loved Barry’s change of attitude when he realized what his uncle meant.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yep, he had no idea. He thought he was on the route to find gold nuggets with which he could make a fortune. But this new discovery brings rewards of its own.

      1. Marsha avatar

Amen! Not too many places you can come up with a gold nugget. There was a young kid and his father in Arizona who found a giant gold nugget.

They must be a wealthy family now. I just hope they’re also happy and enjoying life.

          1. Marsha avatar

I don’t know about its worth, but they certainly smiled on the news.

Excellent build up and I enjoyed the humor, and I love the twist at the end. Barry’s deceased uncle was wise in realizing gold is not always monetary but a cherished life experience.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, gold isn’t always a precious metal, Eugi. It comes in all forms in life.
Glad you enjoyed reading this piece of flash and that the humour came through.

Always a joy to read these flashes. Shouldn’t Dusty’s be Goldy’s?

Now, there’s an idea. It just goes to show how having a fresh pair of eyes does help.

Truly a charming story, Hugh. Barry indeed struck gold! You set the scene perfectly with a nice, golden modern twist!

I’m glad you thought so. Thanks, Terri. Gold comes in many forms, and Barry found his great uncles gold.

Nice twist at the end, Hugh. I wondered where the trail would lead.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

To gold, Cathy. Well, for Barry, it did.

Great story, Hugh! It kept me glued to the screen. :D

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s what I like to hear, Kymber. ‘Glued to the screen.’ That tells me the writing was good.

      1. Kymber Hawke avatar

        Yes, most definitely. :)

You know how to give that twist at the end so well! I liked the scene setting and build up too.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thanks, Esther. I saw Barry in the whole scene while writing his story. I could see him wobbling in those one-size-too-big boots, too.

You put yourself right there as you wrote and it really shows.
