I love coming upon this kind of surprise!
Me, too. You never know what’s going to be around every corner.
It looks rawther unsettling but I concur it would make a great start for a short story – one with odd coincidences and something uncanny.
She does have the look of ‘scare me’ on her face, doesn’t she?
Art is an interpretation for sure. This would be a little unsettling for me to have in my house!
Same here, Debra. I wonder if that’s the reason why the owner left this piece of art outside.
Definitely a conversation piece, and appears to be a ship’s figurehead or a manequin that lost her arms. I wouldn’t be too keen about going up the stairs. I find it rather scary,
I think more of a figurehead from a ship, Eugi. I took the photo in a town that has a port.
Yes, that makes sense, Hugh.
I think she could be a great story starter. How did she get there? Why did she stop there and not complete her journey, or did she? Halloween is coming, Hugh! :)
Lots of very good questions there, Marsha. And is she there to stop you from going up or something from coming down?
My guess is up because she faces the people coming up. So the message is, “I don’t have any arms, are you sure you want to go there?”
I love it, but I do think she is too big for the corner. Absolutely I would go up the stairs to say “hey” and pat her on the head.
Good. I’d be right behind you then, Danny.
Make sure you step outta the way if I come running.
Hmm, yes, it does appear strange to me. I cannot say why, but would not want to have it at home, it gives me an uncomfortable feeling.
I know that feeling well, Erika. I’ve had it when viewing properties, even when watching a TV show involving property buying.
Yes, yes, yes, very good example! I can relate to that too.
Imagine going up the stars in the middle of the night and seeing that silhouette up there. LOL!
I know, right? Especially after a few beers or glasses of wine.
It’s definitely a figure head from the prow of a ship. Think what it’s seen! I do have an odd piece of art – a gnargled bronze hand emerging from a block of buttonwood. No one likes it!
But do you like it? I guess so; otherwise, you wouldn’t have it. Are there any reasons why others don’t like it?
I do like it – perhaps more for what it represents: sailing long ago. It’s not beautiful but it’s ok with me.
Someone gave up trying to carry it up the stairs!
That could be true, as I have no idea how heavy it was.
Indeed a strange one Hugh, some artists have weird ideas which I do not always understand.
Do share it with us at ES WW
My entry for this week: Streetcars
See you soon
It’s like the saying, ‘One person’s trash is another person’s treasure,’ Esme. Whoever put her there obviously liked her there, not inside. Maybe she stands guard to stop anybody going in?
Yes, I agree she looks like a mermaid you would see on a ship, Hugh. How tall was the statue? I suppose I wouldn’t be too worried since her arms and fish tail are gone. If one were to throw her back into the water, would she reanimate? Now that would be scary!
I didn’t climb those steps to find out, Terri. However, I’d say she stood about 5 feet high. I’m not sure what happened to her arms. Maybe the artist didn’t give her any for good reasons. I shudder to think.
Hmm, don’t know what to make of that. What is that place, Hugh?
I think it was a statue of a mermaid or one of those figureheads you see on the front of ships, Cathy. I’m not sure where the steps lead. Although I had one of my dogs with me, I wasn’t tempted to go up to look at the statue any closer. I found it rather scary. The photo was taken in Dartmouth, Devon.
Ah yes, it does look like a ship’s figurehead and I agree, a bit scary.
