I’ve written about comments a lot over the last few months, so this seems like the ideal opportunity to discuss some problems with commenting on WordPress.

First, I want to discuss a problem with getting email notifications from WordPress whenever comments are left on my blog posts.

Light blue image with the words 'Experiencing Problems With Leaving Comments On WordPress? This Is What I Found. Read This Post Now' in white text.
Are you experiencing any of these problems with comments on WordPress?

I’ve stopped getting email notifications whenever anyone comments on one of my posts, so I have had to revert to checking for new comments on my blog’s dashboard.

It’s not a huge problem, but the email notifications act as a backup, so I know when comments have been left, and they also serve as a reminder that I have comments to respond to. I don’t delete an email notification until I’ve replied to a comment. That way, I don’t miss any.

I reported the problem on the WordPress Forum. That was over two weeks ago, and whilst I’ve had a lot of contact from WordPress staff, the problem is currently with their developers.

Is anybody else having problems getting email notifications of comments left on their blog posts? Or is it just me?

I’ve also reported another issue to WordPress. I’m wondering if any of the following are happening to you when leaving comments on other blogs?

Other problems with commenting.

Have you noticed that the comments box on WordPress has changed? The old comments box has been replaced with a new one (see the following image), but it seems to be causing me a few problems.

Have you noticed the new comments box on WordPress?

The above new style comments box has gradually been introduced to most blogs on WordPress.

You can write a comment, press the reply button, and move on pretty swiftly, but my concerns are with something hidden behind the settings (cog) button next to the icon that displays your Gravatar image. When you press the cog, you’ll see this.

Image showing the tree options available on the new-look comments box on WordPress.
There are three options to choose from in the new-look comments box.

See those three new options at the bottom of the comments box? Not only can you now get web and phone notifications of new blog posts from the blog you’re leaving a comment on, but you can set how often you get notifications of new posts.

These are not new, though. They’ve been available for use on WordPress for a long time but were buried deep in our blogs’ dashboard settings. Now, they’re much easier to find and use.

So far, so good, you may think, but it’s the ‘email me new comments‘ button that is causing me concern.

You see, I’m one of those bloggers who like to receive an email whenever anyone replies to a comment I’ve left on their blog or when anyone else leaves a comment on the post I’ve already commented on. It’s my way of knowing that not only have they responded to my comment but also a way for me to either reply to or ‘like’ the comment. I do not like the thought of any blogger thinking I’ve ignored their comment.

The problem now is that when you slide the ‘email me new comments‘ button on, not only do you get emailed comments for the posts you’ve left comments on, but you’ll get email notifications of any comment left on any of the posts on that blog regardless of whether you left a comment or not.

If the blog you’ve left a comment on is huge and gets hundreds of comments, this could become a big problem with your email box filling up quickly.

Needless to say, that is something I do want. I only want email notifications of comments left on the posts I left a comment on. Why? Well, I find that reading comments can sometimes be as interesting as the post they’re left on, plus comments often give me new ideas for blog posts.

I’ve reported the issue to WordPress, and they’ve replied. See the screenshots below. However, I’m not the only one who reported this particular problem.

Somebody else has reported the same problem.

That was the last response from WordPress, but I’ll update this post with any developments.

Some good news – My spam box is empty!

Is it only me, or has anyone else seen a drastic reduction in spam since the new comment box appeared? I used to get hundreds of spam messages to scroll through every day, but now my spam box is empty almost every day – hooray!

So, there is no need to close comments off posts anymore if WordPress has waved a magic wand and stopped the spam once and for all. Hooray – that means I can leave comments on blog posts that are more than a month old.

Are you having any of the problems described in this post or any issues with leaving comments or receiving WordPress notifications as a whole? Has the amount of spam you’re getting plummeted? Let me know in the comments section.

Hugh, I just left a long comment, I don’t think you got it. Needless to say, nothing but grief with commenting for me. :( This is my 4th attempt.

Hi Debby, I got your comment. It was waiting in my moderation queue as I’ve set my blog up so that any comments have be moderated by me before they appear. I hope that helps.

      1. dgkaye avatar

Thanks for letting me know. Some friends have been finding me in spam too. Arg.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

One of the reasons why I check my spam folder everyday. And now that there is no spam going into that box, it’s much quicker and easier to check.

          1. dgkaye avatar

            That’s for sure!

Hi Hugh. I’ve had nothing but grief leaving comments. Many blogs won’t let me comment no matter how hard I try. I hate this new comment stupidity. I always keep ’email comments’ off when I sign up for any blog. I get enough in my inboxes. I find it easier to click the little icon on top and check them through notifications. Yes, thankfully my over 100 spams daily are now zero (well, this week so far). I do hope those engineers bring some happiness back to our blogs soon. :)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Hi Debby, without knowing which method and device you use for leaving comments on other blogs, it’s hard for me to run pass you with my thoughts on why it may be happening. However, I would recommend you let WordPress know and give them as much information as possible such as which blogs you can’t leave comments on, the device and version of web browser you’re using, and screenshots are also of big help.

I use a desktop computer to leave comments and pleased to say I’m not experiencing any problems with leaving comments on any blogs. My problems are more with getting email notifications of comments being left on my posts.

I’d recommend contracting WordPress via their forum. That way, not only do WordPress’s staff see the issues, but so do other WordPress users who can also join in with any information. Here’s a link to the forum – https://wordpress.com/forums/
I find it the best method to use for reporting issues.

      1. dgkaye avatar

Thanks Hugh. I’ll hop over. And I too only read blog on my laptop. So weird, many of my readers have said they are all having probs too. So kudos to you without the commenting grief. :)

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

No worries, Debby. However, I wanted to mention that I came across a blog yesterday where I could not leave a comment. Then I realised at the bottom of the blog there was a box referring to me agreeing to the term and conditions of leaving a comment. Once I ticked the box, I was able to leave a comment. There’s usually a good explanation as to why we can’t leave comments. I recommend you ask those you mentioned that are also experiencing the same problem to contact WordPress about the problem they’re having and to give WordPress details of which blogs they’re not able to leave comments on. If WordPress don’t know, they won’t be able to look into any issues, so the more people that report a problem the better.

          1. dgkaye avatar

            Thanks again Hugh. :)

  3. Eugi avatar

I use my email for incoming posts and comments. I noticed I was getting comments from others on a post I commented on. I found in the Manage subscribed sites – notifications. that if I turn off email me new comments in each blog I follow the issue is resolved. Otherwise, I have had no problems getting comments on my own posts.

And yes, the spam has slowed down considerably.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I don’t mind getting email notifications of comments from other readers providing I also left a comment on the same post, Eugi. I often get ideas from other readers comments. What I do not want is email notifications of other readers comments from posts I’ve not left a comment on. And that’s what happens if I switch the ’email me new comments’ button. They come from all posts, not just the posts where I’ve commented.

Good to hear you’re also seeing much less spam.

      1. Eugi avatar

Your comment is what I was trying to get across, however, your explanation is much clearer than mine.

  4. Dan Antion avatar

You certainly aren’t the only one having / who has had these problems (and more). When they first introduced the new comment box, if you clicked any of those settings, the two panes showing your blog notifications would open. They blocked the Post button and could not be removed. I opened an issue on that, after seeing lots of people complain about it. WordPress said they hadn’t heard and could not recreate my problem.

They continued working on that comment box. It changed appearance and functionality a couple times. Finally, after the (we can’t recreate / clear your cache / send us screen shots) the problem they said never existed was solved. I really think they rushed the new comment box into production. Maybe it was a good thing, maybe we found all the bugs. Thanks again for chasing these issues down, Hugh and reporting to us.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m not sure I understand what you’re referring to when you say ‘They blocked the Post button and could not be removed’, Dan. Can you expand on that a little more? Although, I’m guessing whatever it was, has now been fixed?

They do have a habit of saying they’ve not heard about a problem when it’s clear that other users have reported the same problems. I wonder if they had any users test this new comments box before releasing it? I’m inclined to think they didn’t, given that I can’t think why anyone would want email notifications of comments left on all posts rather than just certain posts.

      1. Dan Antion avatar

If you click on the notification symbol (Bell) a pane opens that shows all your notifications (read and unread). If you click on any one of those, it opens in a new pane to the left of the list (at least it does for me). I would type my comment, but if the ‘Post’ button remained grayed out, I would click to login. At that point, both panes would open, as if I was reading a notification and they would stay visible. The ‘Post’ button was obscured by the panes.

I did discover that I could right-click, select all and copy my comment before reloading the page, which was the only way to get rid of the notification panes.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Right, now I’m with you, Dan. I just checked, and the ‘Send’ button only stops being ghosted out when I write something in the comments box. So it looks like it has been fixed.

  5. bushboy avatar

I only have emails of blogs from photo challenge host. I had email overflows so I didn’t need to know if some commented or followed, I can get all I need from comments or Reader.
I have to click on the WP logo to log in to comment which is a minor annoyance. I don’t have a cog in the comments box to pop my avatar up on comments
Fandango was told that the FBI stopped WP spam 😂

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

So, you’re not seeing your gravatar or the settings cog on any blogs where you’re leaving a comment? Are you always logged into WordPress when trying to leave comments?

      1. bushboy avatar

Yes. I found the cog thanks :)

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

          Phew! Good to hear.

I had a version of your comment gravitar issue when commenting on a blog yesterday. I typed in my comment but thr reply button remained greyed out until I clicked on the gravitar and brought up the options list you showed. Once I’d opened it – I didn’t change an option – the button went blue.
Otherwise yes I’ve experienced your changes though I don’t customarily click on the other comments button so I’ve not seen the flood.
No spam is welcome, isn’t it? I wondered if I could remove the time limit on comments and not reopen an unwelcome door on spam so it’s good to know I can.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s strange that the ‘reply’ button remained grey after typing your comment. Has it happened on any other blog where you’ve tried leaving a comment? Werte you logged into WordPress when leaving the comment? Had you commented on that blog before, or was it the first time you were leaving a comment on that particular blog?

Yes, stopping the flood of spam is a big plus. I’m delighted it has stopped.

  7. Xena avatar

I’m happy to have an empty spam folder, but the trash has over 52,000 comments. They were comments that all said the same thing in a language other than English, and they were posted daily by the 100’s. It’s so many that it won’t empty.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

You may have to bulk delete them over time. Unfortunately, bulk delete only does 20 at a time, so it’s going to take a long time. I’d recommend you contact WordPress and ask if there is a quicker way to delete them. They may even be able to do it for you.

One thing that I don’t understand about this is that when I get ready to leave a comment, the three buttons you referred to are not always marked the same. The email me new posts is usually marked, but occasionally one of the others is as well.

My inbox is cluttered enough already. I’d prefer to keep things to a minimum.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

These buttons are all individual now, Pete. So you may like to follow a blog but only receive web and mobile notifications for posts from the blog rather than get emails notifications. I think having a choice is better, but the email new comments button is certainly a cause for concern.

  9. stevescountry avatar

I have a slightly different problem, one of my regular readers who likes to comment can’t comment anymore. This began about 3 weeks ago and WP has been no help in figuring out the problem. I have not changed any settings so that is not the problem and it is only one reader that is affected, that I know of anyway. Seems like there is always something that happens.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Has that reader reported the problem to WordPress? If it’s only affecting them, it’s probably something to do with the settings on their blog, or could also be related to the blog theme they’re using. If they’re using an old, retired theme, WordPress won’t be supporting and fixing any bugs anymore. It’s worth them checking with WordPress.

Thanks for this post, Hugh. I was wondering why I was no longer getting email notifications of comments on my blog!

That’s good to know about the “Email me new comments”. It makes sense that we’d only want to see comments for the post we’ve commented on.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

So it’s happening to you too, Michelle. At least now I know WordPress can not tell me it’s only me it is affecting. Thanks for letting me know.
