August 28, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story that features a red convertible. Who is driving or riding? Where is the car going? Maybe it isn’t even a car. Have fun and go where the prompt leads! Click here for details.

The Toy Car – by Hugh W. Roberts

I’d spent all my pocket money. Mum wouldn’t buy me the toy red convertible car, so I stole it after hearing somebody say the seller was blind.

That night, I woke to the roar of a car engine and was shocked to see the toy car I’d stolen now full-sized.

Behind the steering wheel was a figure I recognised with dark glasses, who was shaking a white cane.

My screams got drowned out by the constant sound of the car horn while full-beamed lights blinded my eyes. Now I’m deaf and blind.

I wish I hadn’t stolen the car.

That toy car dealer drives a hard bargain! This does have a Twilight Zone vibe.

Thank you. I’m glad you think so. I love anything that has a Twilight Zone vibe.

Great twist Hugh. Karma – that boy got what he deserved. I was reminded of a great “Twilight Zone” episode where a writer, bent on writing a story, had the misfortune of finding a spider in the kitchen sink. A few minutes later the writer rudely pushed a woman visitor away, only to discover the spider had morphed into monstrous proportions while he had answered the door to her. He realized he now needed that woman to help him kill it. She reminded him how he rebuffed her earlier. Great turn of events there as well and because I suffer from arachnophobia, I really liked that episode.

I don’t recall that episode of the Twilight Zone, Linda. Is it an episode from the original series or later remakes of the show?

Hi Hugh – I lost my internet yesterday … now I am horribly behind as I couldn’t even comment on my own Monday post. I don’t have a smartphone, so no way to access internet but my computer. I just Googled it and my mistake, it was “Night Gallery” … I get the two Rod Serling shows mixed up. I will send a link in case you can find the show, but will send it separately in case the link goes to your SPAM filter.

I’ve heard of Night Gallery (and have the DVD Box set) but have yet to view it, Linda. Thanks for sending over the link.

You’re welcome Hugh. I didn’t know Night Gallery was available as a DVD Box Set. I enjoyed that show and Twilight Zone back in the day.

I just noticed this. I need to do a better job as catching these early to work on them. This isn’t the first time this sort of proposal has happened? I get it next time.

No problem. This is my most recent post, anyway. Visit when you can. I don’t expect to read and comment on all my posts. It’s all about the enjoyment.

That Karma is a bit stronger than I would have thought necessary. Payback plus!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Karma isn’t something to mess with. I’d run a mile if I saw it coming towards me.

      1. Norah avatar

I know what you mean, Hugh. 😉😂

thank goodness for the happy ending; I was quite worried for a while..

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, I feel these types of endings always work out the best. One day, I’ll shock you all with a horrible ending.

This resonates, Hugh! I was always too terrified to steal anything. And now I know why! Well done!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you. Karma will always get those that do wrong, Terri.
