I don’t play chess but that black and white photo is stunning, Hugh. I think it takes a lot patience and time to play chess, which I don’t have much of either one.
You’re right about Chess needing a lot of time and patience, Eugi. One game can take up a vast amount of time. It’s been known for some chess games to take days, if not weeks, to complete.
That’s a cool chess set, Hugh. I assume you play? I know how to play, but I’m not a board game person. I always feel there are better things to do than play games – when I’m alone or in company.
That being said, I’ve seen some amazing chess sets throughout the world and it would be nice as a collector to buy those as souvenirs. Not me, obviously, since I don’t like the game and don’t have room for souvenirs. :)
Yes, I can play chess, Liesbet. However, I don’t play it as often as I can. The problem is finding somebody else to play. Apart from my brother-in-law, nobody in the family plays chess, but he’s always too busy to play. Given how long a game can last, I’m unsurprised, although I know some players return to a game, sometimes days after the last move. But I don’t see the fun in that.
You could teach your partner? Or doesn’t he like chess? Backgammon is a cool board game as well…
My partner hates games, Liesbet. Even when I do our family Boxing Day quiz, he makes such a fuss about having to join in. No, he’s not a games person at all. He’s much happier in the garden.
What a beautiful chess set! I did learn to play chess but I didn’t enjoy it – probably because I didn’t play very well. Backgammon is another matter, I love this game.
I’ve never played backgammon, June. That’s one I need to learn – maybe during Christmas when the board games come out).
I don’t think I’ve ever played the game, but I love beautifully made chess pieces, especially when they are themed, like the one in your picture. I wonder if there is a chess museum somewhere in the world, full of gorgeous sets. I’d pay to see that!
I also loved The Queen’s Gambit… not enough to learn how to play, though. :)
I had a quick look, and there are Chess museums worldwide, Janis. Sadly, none are in the UK, but when I looked, I discovered that the British Museum in London has a section of Chess pieces. That’s something I will check out next time I’m visiting London. The nearest one to you is in St. Louis, Missouri.
I’ve never played chess, Hugh. I played checkers with my cousins when I was young. We also played a game called Chinese Checkers. I like board games, but fall asleep playing cards! The photo really sets a mood. When we go to hotels, I hunt for game rooms or libraries. They’re usually quiet and peaceful.
I’ve heard and played Chinese Checkers and ‘draughts’, the British version of Checkers, Kay. But when I was introduced to Chess at school, it wasn’t long before I became hooked and abandoned the draughts pieces for Chess pieces.
The chessboard in the photo was in a hotel library and games room. And you’re right about it always being a quiet place. But I think that’s how that room should always be.
No. Are you a good chess player Hugh? Way back when I used to be pretty good. I learned to play from someone who was an incredible chess player. My goal was to be better than him. I remember the first time I ever won playing him. I felt like I conquered Mt. Everest. :-)
My maternal grandfather was an excellent chess player. When I was a little kid I remember he had a chess board set up in the living room. It seems that he played any man that came into his home when I was there. I never played him though. He came across as gruff but was a softy underneath it all.
I would enjoy playing but don’t know anyone who would be interested. Plus it takes up more time than I have these days.
I can play chess, but I wouldn’t say I’m good at winning, Lea. I’m too spontaneous with it and often leap before I look. I need to take more time with it. But I do enjoy playing chess.
Isn’t it strange that it seemed to be a game for men? You mentioned your grandfather would play chess with any man who came into his home. Would he have played the game with a woman? Growing up, I never recalled seeing any women playing chess or being challenged to play the game.
I agree that playing chess can take up a lot of time, but sometimes, winning the game can be done in just a few moves.
I can’t imagine winning that fast Hugh. I was never that good.
Hugh, I don’t know if he ever played a woman. I never saw him play, even my grandmother, or one of his daughters, or grand daughters. Maybe it was a man’s only game at one time? I didn’t live in the same state as him and didn’t see him frequently. My husband did play him though.
I think it may well have been more of a man’s game back then. However, if you have watched ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ on Netflix, what I’m saying is not entirely true.
Always loved the look of chess sets and this black and white photo is awesome but I have never been able to figure the game out but have tried to learn it, I am more backgammon less chess,
Backgammon is a game I’ve never tried. One for me to discover. Thanks for mentioning it.
Not clever enough to play this game.
My entry for this week Wish I were there
Hope you will pop over and share with us your entries at ES #50 #WordlessWednesday
You don’t need to be clever to play Chess. It’s a game that has many levels, just like other games. Games can last between a few minutes to hours. But it should always be about the fun, too.
This is a great black and white photo I do love it it’s so moody 💜💜
Black and white photography seems to have that effect, Willow. I need to take more photos in black and white.
i almost prefer Black and white photos 💜💜
The old photos are fantastic. My last surviving aunt had a huge box of old black-and-white photos. When I visited her, we’d always go through some of them. When she passed away a few years ago, she left me some of the photos. I only wished we’d had more time to talk about the people in them.
We have boxed like that Hugh but as each generation dies out they take the information with them.
I’ve never been able to play chess!
It’s all about knowing how each piece moves (and protecting your King), Esther. I was hooked by it all at school. Much rather play chess than do maths.
I’ve never liked maths either!
Technically yes! That’s a lovely set.
Given how the pieces look, I was surprised to see them out and to see anyone being allowed to use them. All I can say is that the hotel was very trusting of their guests.
My grandson would love this chess board! He’s 10 years old and already a chess master!
How great to hear how well your grandson is doing at playing chess, Jan. I saw this chessboard in a hotel. It was out on display for residents to use (if they wanted). The chess pieces were amazing.
I don’t play chess, but that sure is a beautiful black and white image, Hugh! Is that your home?
No, not my home, Terri. I found this chess set inside a hotel we once stayed at. It was a beautiful room, perfect for playing board games in.
Nope, never learned it and it seems extremely boring. Chess is not for me, but that’s the truth regarding any kind of sport 😂.
Fair enough. It’s not a game for everyone, but it is a great way to learn what to do next. Players must think at least a couple of steps ahead of each other.
😂 perhaps that is why I’m not built for it then. I absolutely suck at seeing patterns and knowing what comes ahead.
Definitely not! I am hopeless at chess. My dad tried to teach me and gave up!
Lol, that made me smile. I was taught it at school and was hooked immediately, although I don’t play it as much as I used to.
He may have tried when I was too young?
I was 13 when I was introduced to it. When I think back, it was all boys who wanted to learn how to play chess, and the girls didn’t seem that interested. But if you’ve watched ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ on Netflix, you’ll know how that isn’t always the case.
Well this is quite the synchronistic moment for me, Hugh! I have never played chess before, but literally last night I had a dream about a chess board, and how all of the pieces had to be in the right order before the next move! Wow, thank you so much, Hugh! Cher xoxoxo
This post must have broken your dream, Cher. Once you know where all the pieces go, it stays with you. I started playing chess at school and loved it, although I don’t play as often as I used to.
I also enjoyed the Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit, which is about a female chess player. I was hooked from the first episode.
Yes, I love playing chess!
I haven’t played chess for a while, but the rules on how to play never leave you.
