WordPress: Excerpts Are Working Again!

Earlier this week, in my post, ‘Is This WordPress Problem Affecting You? It’s Been Reported.’ I outlined a problem where excerpts no longer appeared in WordPress’s new post email notifications.

Is This WordPress Problem Affecting You? It’s Been Reported

I’m delighted to say that the problem has now been fixed. Unfortunately, users will need to change the ‘For each new post email, include‘ setting back to ‘Excerpt,’ as the fix has caused the setting to default back to ‘Full text.’

Do the following now if you want your new post email notifications to only show an excerpt.

  • On the dashboard of your blog, go to Settings – Newsletter.
  • Scroll down to the Emails sections of the Newsletter settings page, and change the ‘For each new post email, include‘ setting back to ‘Excerpt.’
  • Click the ‘Save Settings‘ button.

Change this setting to ‘Excerpt.’

Your new post notification emails will now only show an excerpt rather than the full post.

The ‘For each new post email, include‘ setting can also be found on your blog’s dashboard under SettingsReading.

My thanks to Dave Martin at Automattic and WordPress for fixing this problem.

    1. That’s good to hear, Debby. Unfortunately, when WordPress fixed the issue, this setting went back to ‘Full Text’, which is the default setting. If you see other bloggers’ posts being displayed in full on email, let them know, as I know most of us want people to visit our blogs to read posts.

      1. Thanks again Hugh. I absolutely will. Monday and Tuesday nights are my blog reading nights now. Every one I open with full text, I will alert and mention your post. :)

  1. I thought it might be working again because I saw the setting be being set to full post a few days ago (or yesterday maybe?). Now it’s working again. Awesome! Thanks for sharing this, though.

    1. WordPress told me it was fixed on Friday, yet on Saturday, I was still getting new post notifications showing the entire post. I checked my blog’s settings and noticed the settings were on ‘Full Text.’ I changed it to ‘Excerpt’ and did a test post to ensure it worked. Once I was confident, I published this post.

Thank you for mentioning the ‘Reader Council’ blog. If you hadn’t mentioned it, I think the problem would have still existed, as Dave, who hosts that blog, took up the issue and fixed it.

  2. Thank-you Hugh, I’ve now changed my setting. I did notice when I was in settings that there is a ‘Enable featured image on your new post emails’ option. Mine is switched off; just wondered if you would consider this an option worth switching on or is it a case of personal preference?

  3. Perfect time for your post, Hugh! I took care of the fixes and just in time for my Sunday Stills post to publish tomorrow! Thank you again for all you do to help bloggers! Enjoy your weekend!

  4. Thanks for sharing this Hugh. I did have some trouble finding the newsletter option. On my dashboard, it was under Jetpack/Settings/Newsletter. I have updated my settings. We’ll find out tomorrow morning when my next post goes live if it worked!

    1. You’re welcome, Michelle. I think the settings depend on whether your blog is self-hosted or a WordPress.com blog (I believe yours is self-hosted?). I forgot to add the self-hosted warning on the post, so I’ll add it now.

The email for my post showed the excerpt rather than the whole post. I hope it’s the same for your post on Monday, but there is an option to preview what emails look like before publishing a post. It’s been added as a new option on the menu where you can preview what posts look like on a desktop computer, tablet, and mobile. Plus, WordPress has made it easier to find.

    2. Thank you, Michelle!! I manage FoodTalk4U.com and we started having this problem months ago. I could NOT find a fix as the regular “settings” was already at “excerpt.” After reading your post, I went to Jetpack and looked – and there it was – full text! So, thank you so much for posting your findings. You never know who it might help!! Sheree
