I just embarked on my journey of growing vegetables at home, and I can’t wait to see the results!
Good luck with them. I hope you get a great first harvest of whatever it is you grow.
We did when we had a garden, we grew potatoes and lettuce, peas, beans and raspberries. We tried to grow tomatoes but never had much luck with those. Got some green ones, but they never went red. Well done for growing so many tomatoes!
Green tomatoes often mean they’ve not had enough sunlight, usually because they have fruited too late or not had enough light due to the plants foliage blocking the sun/light. This was just one picking, and we’ve had many more this summer with the plant still producing tomatoes for us. We are coming to the end of the season, though.
How wonderful, I hope you enjoy them. We must’ve had the perfect garden for raspberries, because we used to get so many of them. And our dog liked to eat them right off the plant!
Strangely, certain spots seem to be the perfect place for one fruit or veg and not the others. We have two fig trees, one producing a load of fruit (when we have a hot summer), but the other one, we don’t get anything. It must be about how much direct sun they get.
I’ve never heard of a dog liking raspberries. My two dogs don’t like any fruit, although they like raw carrots.
Yes, it’s really interesting.
Those tomatoes look divine. We actually have a community’s farmer’s market just a few blocks from my place. However, I’ve never ventured there. But, thanks to you, I will definitely check it out. Thank you!

Community farmer’s markets are a great place to shop because you’re helping local businesses. Whenever I visit ours, I always come back with a bag full of fresh goodies.
That is true. From now on, I shall frequent farmer’s markets for their unbeatable produce. Thank you!
I have a very small garden, but the best vegetables are our own!
I agree. Homegrown fruit and veg are the best.
They should have waited longer to pick them. That’s all I can think of. Isn’t that terrible. 🤣😎🙃
But they were ripe for picking. The taste would not have been as sweet if we’d waited longer.
In that case I concede 🤣😎🙃
I love home-grown tomatoes. They taste so much better than those in a grocery store. These look delicious!
I agree; they do taste much better, Eugi.
There is nothing quite like a fresh home grown tomato. I frequent a farm stand where I buy lots and lots of them every summer.
I bet they taste as good as they look, Michael.
They do!
Well done Hugh what a wonderful crop 💜💜💜
Credit to my partner; he’s the gardener, Willow.
Well indeed credit to him then but you can both enjoy them 😁
Yum. I really do miss having a garden 😕
Brenda, the garden was a haven during lockdown. Sadly, I have not been able to sit in it much this summer, though.
We really haven’t had the weather this year, have we. Walking across from the college after work today, I was thinking how it felt like winter with the rain earlier, and now the winds
I’m just very pleased that I can count the number of hot and humid days we’ve had this summer on one hand, Brenda.
I admire you for growing such good looking tomatoes. I can almost smell them.
I wish you could taste just how sweet they are as well, Erika.
Awhhh, I wish so too!!
We planted cherry tomatoes one year and we ended up with so many that we ended up burying them into the garden at the end of the season. HUGE Mistake. Been pulling them up trying to get rid of them every day since.
I’d have made lots of tomato-based sauces with the over-crop and frozen the lot. I wasn’t aware that the tomato plant was so invasive. Thank goodness ours are all grown in pots.
We get a little too much fog for tomatoes sadly!!! Those do look tasty.
The taste is much better than shop-bought. We also grow them in the greenhouse, where the heat can build when the sun does shine.
Lovely tomatoes, Hugh. Homegrown is the best! We don’t grow anything in our camper, but when we arrived here in Belgium, I bought a basil plant for our little home while we are here. It’s thriving. When we sailed for eight years, we grew mint, basil, spinach, and sprouts. The geckos loved it, so we had pets as well. :)
Are those Brussels sprouts you’re referring to, Liesbet? They tend to be winter vegetables here in the UK and are very popular at Christmas time. I love the smell of fresh basil growing in the garden. It never survives in the garden here because it’s too cool and wet.
I actually meant bean sprouts, Hugh. We would buy beans/lentils and let them sprout, so we had some greens in areas where we couldn’t buy many vegetables. So, technically, we were sprouting them and not “growing” them. :)
That makes sense, Liesbet, and I did wonder if that was what you meant. I love beansprouts, especially when eating Chinese food.
I love home-grown tomatoes. So much better than store bought. But we grew them for a year until the squirrels got them. They eat everything. Now my husband grows flowers they don’t like!
Fortunately, our greenhouse provides good protection against hungry mouths. I’ve never heard of squirrels eating flowers, although they do dig up some spring bulbs and eat them.
Ours like certain flowers. I’d love to have a greenhouse but the HOA forbids them.
Maybe a cold frame? They are much smaller, but they help protect what’s inside them, too.
I’ll have to check with the HOA king of yards!
WOW, those fresh tomatoes do look so tasty, I will enjoy them with a meal!
My contribution for this week: Cascade Falls and hoping all will participate and share your own links at ES #40 #WordlessWednesday
Thanks in advance.
Thanks, Esme.
They look delicious, Hugh.
And they taste amazing, Cathy.
Gorgeous tomatoes, Hugh! We have a chocolate cherry tomato bush, with a LOT of green ones waiting to ripen. I think the two handfuls of blueberries we had were a bonus since it was our first year growing them. Enjoy your bounty!
Chocolate cherry tomatoes sound mouthwatering, Terri. But given that tomatoes are fruits, I love how sweet some of the homegrown ones taste.
Not recently, Hugh! We spend so much time in France that it would be difficult to look after them. Do you grow any fruit or veg, I wonder?! I think there’s nothing to beat home-grown runner beans!
My partner grows all the fruit and veg in our garden, June. Everything tastes so much better than shop-bought. I’ve almost finished the home-grown blueberries. They are the best of the lot (in my opinion).
These look absolutely delicious, Hugh! I know there is a community garden in my area, but I have never taken advantage of it. Looking at this beautiful bounty of tomatoes makes me want to inquire about the garden! Cher xoxoxo
I’d visit those community gardens, Cher. Homegrown tomatoes always taste better than shop-bought ones. Who knows what those community gardens have to offer?
That’s a great idea, Hugh! They sure do, don’t they? Thank you! I’ll check online and see how to get in touch with some groups! Cher xoxoxo
