I am not a baker Hugh, but the pie looks delicious! I have never had apple pie à la mode, just with a piece of cheddar cheese on top, the Canadian way (though I’ve lived in the U.S. since 1966).

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Ah, so it’s a Canadian tradition to eat apple pie with cheddar cheese, then, Linda? I wondered where it came from as I’ve never seen anybody eat cheese with apple pie in the UK.

      1. Linda Schaub avatar

Yes, it is a Canadian tradition Hugh – sharp cheddar (Black Diamond brand is the most popular). When we moved here to the States, we were surprised to find no one had heard of it – it is tasty. You have to try it and see if you like the contrast of cheddar cheese and the sweet of the apples.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’ve eaten an apple with cheese, but never apples in a pie with pastry and cheese, Linda. I’d never heard of eating it like that since I read some of the comments on this post.

          1. Linda Schaub avatar

They might all be Canadians voting for apple pie with cheese Hugh. Well, if you enjoy cheese with an apple, then you have to try it. :)

  2. Janis @ RetirementallyChallenged.com avatar

Probably some heat and some vanilla ice cream. Most likely I wouldn’t get any, though. That’s my husband’s favorite pie so I doubt I’d be able to get it away from him. :)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

He sounds greedy if he doesn’t share apple pie with you, Janis. I’d demand a bigger spoon for you.

That looks like one of hubby’s pies 💜💜💜

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

So he’s the baker in the house? Does he bake sweet and savoury pies?

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

      Good choice. Any particular flavour?

  5. Annette Rochelle Aben avatar

A chunk of sharp cheddar cheese!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I am rather concerned by all the cheese suggestions. I’ve never seen somebody eat cheese with apple pie, but I’ll have to give it a try sometime.

      1. Annette Rochelle Aben avatar

        Just how we were raised…

  6. Cathy avatar

It looks delicious, Hugh. Would definitely go perfectly with custard.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Phew, I’m glad to have another vote for custard, Cathy.

  7. JT Twissel avatar

I do have a sweet tooth but I’m not much of a baker – only thing I make well are choc chip cookies. I like coffee with pie.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Chock chip cookies sound great. I hope you make them often.

Ice cream or cream – the best ever.

Well, my assumption is an apple pie, so.i would have to say custard!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m with you and the custard.

  10. Terri Webster Schrandt avatar

Homemade apple pie, Hugh? Beautiful job and I like the little leaves!

Whipped cream, no question! I like making my own, but I use Land O’Lakes brand, very little sugar. The pie looks inviting. My husband can’t get through a week without a piece of pie. He’ll be right over ;)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I wish I baked more, Terri. I recall baking banana bread during the pandemic; this is the first thing I’ve baked since then. The leaves on the top are something I remember my grandmother putting on the pies she baked. Back then, there was a new pie almost every day.

There is only one answer – Ice Cream!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

      Any particular flavour?

      1. Mac's Opinion avatar

I’m not picky, but in this case Vanilla would be best suited.

  12. junedesilva avatar

The thought of warm apple pie and cold Madagascan vanilla ice cream makes my taste buds tingle!

Thanks for your link. I love your dog photo.

If apple pie then cheddar cheese.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Wow! Another vote for cheddar cheese. I must try it out next time I bake an apple pie.

      1. RasmaSandra avatar

One of the most delicious ways to do the cheese is to bake the apple pie and when it is done sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the pie and pop it back in until the cheese if melted.

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Oh, my, that’s entirely new for me when it comes to apple pie. I’m going to have to give it a try.

Hi Hugh, I like Liesbet’s idea of hot chocolate!! I never would have thought of that for pie but instead coffee or tea. But hot cholate sounds yummy. When I was a kid our family served ice cream with pie at the holidays. I like both but not together. My husband got me into having apple pie with cheddar cheese. I’m not a big fan of cheddar, however mild cheddar does go well with apple pie.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I know people who love apple and cheese sandwiches, Lea. And I agree that apples go well with cheese. I’m not sure about eating cheese with an apple pie, though. Maybe I need to try it out. I prefer my apple pie served with hot custard (and lots of it).

      1. Lea avatar
        Lea

I’ve never had it with custard but that sounds delicious Hugh. It’s a good thing I just ate because if I hadn’t I would have had to go get a pie with all the sides mentioned after reading all the suggestions. :-)

        1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m amazed by all the suggestions so far, Lea.

  15. seaangel4444 avatar

It looks absolutely delicious, Hugh! I would serve it with Yorkshire Gold tea! It’s only after 8:00 a.m., but I sure wish I had a slice of that beautiful pie! Wow! Cher xoxoxo

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten apple pie for breakfast, Cher, although I do eat some fruit every morning for breakfast.

      1. seaangel4444 avatar

I haven’t either, Hugh; however, the pie looks so tasty that were it in front of me, I’d most definitely reach for a slice! Yes, having fruit every morning for breakfast is a wise idea! Cher xoxoxo

  16. noelleg44 avatar

I bake a lot and a lot of pies. Might depend on what this pie contains. Ice cream or whipped cream would do nicely but if it were apple, maybe maple whipped cream, if peach, cinnamon whipped cream.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

It’s an apple pie, so whipped cream or ice cream sounds perfect, Noelle. Or maybe both? My partner likes apple pie served with custard and ice cream.

  17. Dan Antion avatar

That looks delicious, Hugh., I would serve that pie, as long as I was also at the table.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Everyone is welcome at the table here at Hugh’s Views And News, Dan. And the best thing about that pie is that it serves as many people as you want it to.

  18. Liesbet @ Roaming About avatar

Looks yummy, Hugh. Can I have a slice? :) I’m missing tasty baked goods. I would serve it with a variety of tea and/or hot chocolate. Here in Argentina, they’d serve it with their national herbal drink, mate. :)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Nice choices, Liesbet. What about something with the pie in a dish? Maybe custard or ice cream?

      1. Liesbet @ Roaming About avatar

Vanilla ice cream. No question about it! :-)
