Five A Day #flashfiction

It was getting harder and harder to get my five a day.

Why had I even come here? It was the worst place I’d ever visited, yet they kept me here because I couldn’t find them anywhere else.

However, time was now running out, and I’d soon have to find another place for my fix.

Maybe I should leave now? Yes, that was probably a good idea.

Then, just as I was about to leave and head for the stars, I heard the cry of the human baby. One last meal, and then I’d leave this almost inhospitable planet.

Written as part of the 99-word Flash Fiction Challenge with the theme of Five a Day, hosted by Charli Mills at the Carrot Ranch.

Deliciously dark, Hugh! I was thinking along the lines of cake, but to each his own fix…!

Thanks, Charli. Glad you didn’t guess what was on that space travellers five a day menu. 😀

It’s my mind, Janice, I blame my mind. 😀

You are so creepy Hugh – and I say that in the best possible way :) :) :)

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

      lol. Thank you, Claudette. 😀

Bwahahaha! Fabulously fiendish, Hugh. I’m put to shame… all I could think of (for 5 a day) was vitamins. Probably from the fact that I always forget them. Have a terrific Tuesday! Hugs.

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Thanks, Teagan. My mind runs riot, sometimes, when I see these writing prompts. Perhaps it’s the cod liver oil I take every morning? 🤔
      Hugs to you.

    No way!
And I thought turnips were gross :)

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Nope, it’s parsnips that are gross. Well, as far as I’m concerned, anyway. 😀

I am with you all the way on that one Hugh. Why would anyone eat them?

        1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Exactly. I blame my mother for my dislike of them, Andrew. Apparently, she had a craving for mashed parsnips smothered in butter while pregnant with me. Why couldn’t she have had a craving for chocolate or cake? 🤔

          1. Andrew Petcher avatar

Oh, how much nicer that would have been Hugh!

          2. Andrew Petcher avatar

I don’t like most root vegetables, Parsnip, Turnip, Swede, I am not even that ken on carrots but I will eat them just so that I can see in the dark!

    Bon appetite, Hugh! :-)

      Thank you, Liesbet. 😀

Okay, that was creepy in true Hugh style, lol. Nice to see you working under pressure now, under 99 words! You’re rocking it my friend. :) <3

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Thanks, Debby. Those are lovely compliments. This challenge is tough because it has to be 99-words long (no more, no less). I often find myself having to cut words out, but I’ve learned that it’s a great way of getting rid of useless words that add nothing to the story.
      xx

      1. dgkaye avatar

Exactly! That’s why I enjoy them too when I get time to jump in. :) xx

I had to read this twice. Ha ha. The first time was a… “What?! Oh, Hugh!”
Great story. Cracked me up but wonderfully gruesome!

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

It is rather gruesome, isn’t Diana? But Charli did say write where the story takes you. When I saw ‘five a day’, I immediately thought about a space traveller of our future and what one of its five a day might be if it came to our planet.

The ending was not what I expected! Good one Hugh.

    Oh, my goodness!! Hugh!!!

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

I know. I plunged the deaths of my dark brain for this one, Judith.

    Nooooo! Not a baby!!! 🤤🤤🤤

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Well, I suppose we do eat baby animals. I’m not sure how the human race would cope if the cards were turned.

      1. Ritu avatar

        I don’t even want to imagine… but you’re right… we subject animals to this…

  14. Jane Dougherty avatar

What a delightful story, Hugh! anyone would think you’d seen the quote for today’s poetry challenge…

    1. Hugh's Views and News avatar

Oh, I can’t do poetry. I’m guessing it was an unusual quote, Jane?
