In my recent blog post, Experiencing Problems With Leaving Comments On WordPress? This Is What I Found. Read This Post Now, I shared details of two problems I was experiencing connected to comments on WordPress.
I am thrilled to inform you that the issue I reported regarding the ‘Email me new comments‘ checkbox when leaving a comment has been successfully resolved by WordPress.

So here’s what happened: When you checked the ‘Email me new comments‘ box, things went a bit haywire. You not only started getting email notifications for comments on that specific post, but you also got bombarded with notifications for comments on other posts on that blog, even if you hadn’t left a comment or picked the ‘Email me new comments‘ option. Your inbox was basically drowning in a sea of WordPress emails. Crazy, right?
Now, when you select the ‘Email me new comments‘ option, rest assured that you will only receive email notifications for comments posted on the exact same post where you have left a comment.
Why do I tick the ‘Email me new comments’ box?
Not only do I get informed via email when I get a reply to a comment I’ve left, but reading other blog posts’ comments always helps me with ideas for new posts. Sometimes, comments can be as interesting as the post they’ve been left on.
I can also definitely lend a helping hand when bloggers reach out for assistance in their comments. Moreover, I take great pleasure in rectifying any misinformation that comes my way. Just the other day, I came across a comment where a blogger erroneously mentioned that having a WordPress account is a prerequisite for leaving comments. Allow me to assure you that this information is not accurate. Indeed, anyone can participate in the discussion without the need for a WordPress account.
One problem remains
The problem I reported concerning no longer getting email notifications when somebody leaves a comment on any of my posts has still not been fixed. However, WordPress has assured me that they’re still working on fixing it.
I’d be interested in knowing if anybody else is experiencing problems with not getting email notifications when comments are left on their posts. Please let me know in the comments section.
Are you experiencing any problems with leaving or receiving comments on blog posts? What are they, and have you reported them to WordPress?

Well, that’s interesting. I haven’t kept an eye on it, as I changed email notifications to notifications via Jetpack. So I wouldn’t get spammed with all the sites I’m following, haha!
I only get emails for new blog post from genuine blogs I’m following. However, if they publish more than one post a day, I switch off email notifications from them as I don’t want my email inbox getting too overwhelmed.
thanks for keeping us up to date 🤣😎🙃
For a while now, I get email notifications of some new comments on my own blog, but when certain followers leave comments I don’t get notified. Must have to do with their WordPress account, or maybe they don’t have one and I only get notified about WordPress users leaving comments. No idea. But, I can always check within my website who left comments, as I reply there anyway.
If you’re happy with the work-around you have, then no need to do anything, Liesbet. However, it should not be working like that and you should be getting email notifications whenever anyone leaves you a comment (if you have those settings enabled).
Thank you for sharing this post, Hugh. For the last couple of days, I haven’t been able to comment on a few posts which doesn’t help when you are running a prompt. Otherwise, I haven’t had the problems you mention on either of my blogs which one is on an FSE theme and the other is on a classic theme. I have noticed other glitches when I try to make changes on both blogs and WP seems to run very slow at times no matter which browser I use whereas my other sites are fine.
Are you logged into WordPress when trying to leave those comments, Eugi? I only ask because I know that many bloggers are unaware that the ‘commentator must be logged into WordPress’ setting is turned on, so those not logged in will not be able to leave a comment. I’ve turned those settings off on my blog making it easy for anyone to leave a comment.
I was logged in, Hugh. I was attempting to comment on posts that are my regulars However, I will check my settings. I am having issues with both blogs, which I’ve not had before. So, I am in the process of checking all settings, etc. Thank you for your comment.
I’ve turned off email notifications because it was getting to be too much! It’s great that they fixed the bug where you’ll only receive email notifications for posts you commented on and not a bunch of random posts!
I can’t tell you how much I’m pleased they fixed the bug I reported to them. My inbox can breathe again.
My issue with the new comment box is when, unlike you, the blogger hasn’t disabled the need to login. But that’s not WPs fault. It’s just a faff!
You’re right. That’s not a WordPress issue. Users can change settings in the dashboard of their blog so that those that want to leave a comment do not need to be logged in to WordPress to do so.
As others have mentioned, there seems to be no consistency when I receive notifications, even when I don’t change any settings. It’s a bit of a mystery. Sometimes, I’m inundated with notifications regarding others’ posts I haven’t commented on. Other times, I don’t receive notifications when the author has responded to my comments. I’m not someone who complains a lot about WordPress, but that is certainly an area I wish I could improve.
I’d recommend reporting any issues to WordPress, Pete. The WordPress forums is a great place to report issues as other bloggers can sometimes help. The more of us that report issues with the WordPress platform, the better.
I am glad that this time I am not affected by that bug. However, thank God, they fixed at least the first problem. There is still hope…
It sometimes takes much longer to fix an issue, but I’ve found that they usually do fix them, Erika.
That’s right and they need to, otherwise, they lose their customers. My website is a WordPress site too. I am carful with updating plugins and sometimes wait a little withthe update. Right because they can have a bug. So, when I update them some of those bugs may have already been solved.
It’s one of the reasons why I haven’t switched the theme of my blog to a FSE theme, Erika. There are still quite a few bugs with them, plus they’re quite complicated to install (so I’m told).
Oh, I hear you! I thought about changing my theme too, since I have it for quite a while, but compared to the time I set up the current theme, I simply don’t have the time and nerves anymore to deal with it. And I expect bugs or at least, me struggling to getting it all the way I want to… lol
I’m the opposite! I get email notifications when I don’t what them. I waste an hour a day deleting email comments that are the same as on the notification menu. We used to be able to follow a blog but not get an email. Now, I’m inundated with email. Some of my email that’s important isn’t getting through because gmail only lets so much through. It’s really frustrating. Just because I follow a blog doesn’t mean I want to see every thing they post. Does that make sense? I can’t keep up.
You can turn email notifications off either in your blog’s settings or on the new comments box, Colleen. However, if you’ve already done that and are still getting emails, you need to report the problem to WordPress.
I can certainly turn off email notifications from blogs that publish new posts more than once a day. I can also set them so that I receive one email a week that has all the links to the posts published that week. It’s useful to have, although I don’t follow many blogs anymore that publish more than once a day anymore as I find it too overwhelming.
Thanks so much, Hugh. I will look for these settings. I’m overwhelmed with emails. Poets tend to post more than once a day.
Let me know if you need any help in finding those settings.
Thanks, Hugh. I think I found the settings. Hopefully, I’ve turned off all the emails.
I can see why folks using the free or (personal blog, like I use for my business) are having a hard time with the FSE themes. They are much easier to use than they were only a few months ago… but if you’re on free or personal plan, you can’t change the colors or the fonts. I can’t even read some of the type on the themes. You have to upgrade to the Premium plan to change colors and fonts! For me, that’s 3 blogs at over $300 a year for Premium themes and domains. This is starting to get really pricey. Thanks for your help. You always have great articles.
There are still over 50 Classic themes available, Colleen. And all are still supported by WordPress. It’s one of the reasons why I have stuck with a Classic theme for my blog until the issues with FSE themes are sorted.
Lookout for Black Friday deals from WordPress too. Last year, I got 40% off the price of my Business plan. It was not due to expire, but I took the offer and WordPress added on what I had remaining, so I got about 18 months for a great plan. I was very pleased with myself.
I’ll have to pay closer attention to this, Hugh. This is another good post for discussion. Oddly I get some emails that someone commented on my post, but it’s inconsistent. Luckily all links and comments appear in my notifications online and through jetpack, so i just rely on that for checking comments. Before when I clicked that option on another bloggers site I was inundated with emails of comments from the entire post, so I had to stop that.
What’s inconsistent now is I do receive some emails that someone left a comment or link, but not always. I rarely use the reader for posts, I’d rather subscribe and adjust the frequency of reading blog posts. Things are still glitchy but it’s getting better. I still have to log in to comment on some posts If using jetpack app. I fear WP still has a lot of work to do 🤪
If you’re only getting some email notifications that somebody has left a comment on your posts, then there is certainly a problem, Terri. I don’t get any email notifications of comments or links left on my posts, unless they’re from an anonymous commentator, although like you mentioned, I can check the notification centre. The problem with that is that I tend to sometimes forget to check it, hence why I rely on email notifications. Once I know I’ve replied, I delete the email.
And this problem only started for me when the new comments box appeared.
Yes, I agree there is still work to do, but I’m glad the problem with the ‘Email me new comments’ button has been sorted.
My theory, and it’s just that, I think it depends on our themes. A couple of bloggers have trouble leaving comments on my posts, but I can leave them on theirs. Hard to find any overall consistency with these glitches. As they say, work-in-progress!
If a theme has been retired and is no longer supported, it can certainly cause problems, Terri. I’m always shocked when somebody says they do not want to change their retired, non-supported theme, yet they will continue to complain that they’re still having problems with their blog. User experience is also a big factor. Some of the problems I see reported on the Forums are because users are not using the correct procedures, yet they still complain.
Go figure!
Why doesn’t WordPress notify us before they make changes to see if anyone wants them. I am not a fan of the new Subscribe button that they just added. That thing is a pain and now I have subscribed to myself, so I am getting emails every time I make a post, which I don’t need. It says, “Never miss a beat! Interested in getting blog post updates? Simply click the button below to stay in the loop!” I am not sure how anyone else feels about this, but as long as someone is in my Reader, I don’t need to get an email every time they write a new post.
I believe they do ask users to be beta testers and run changes pass them first. The beta testers then report any improvements they’d like to see as well as any bugs. But sometimes, bugs can occurs after testing has taken place. I did like the previous comments box, but this new ones gives users more flexibility of what they want.
I prefer to get emails of new posts because I’m not a fan of the WordPress Reader, so I’m happy to get email notifications of new posts. I think being given the choice as to wether you want emails or not is the best route because whatever changes occur, not everyone will like them.
I do like to have the ability to choose, but I feel that this new Subscribe button is wasting my time, as I already know which posts I want to get emails on. I can deal with it, but I wish it would go away because I feel it is totally unnecessary. I use the Reader all the time and I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly on this issue Hugh. This was a big change, and I haven’t heard any other bloggers say anything about it and I wonder if others feel the way I do.
I know when the new comments box was first launched, there were a few complaints, but generally I’ve seen many bloggers like the change. The bug I reported caused problems and it took a while to fix, but I think it’s more a case of using what you want. For example, I love the Block editor but don’t use all the blocks – just the ones I like. Changes can seem inconvenient, but I generally witness the majority of bloggers adapting to changes and moving on.
I’m a fan of changes and updates, otherwise, things can become dull. I wasn’t a fan of the Block to start with, but now I’d never go back to using the Classic editor.
I am so happy that I still have the option of using the classic editor.
Thanks for the feedback on that first one! And for the second, goodness; I’m still stumped and grasping for straws. I can’t say I hope others are experiencing the same thing, but if they are that will at least give us more clues.
If anyone does report the same issue I’m having, I’ll ask them to report the problem through the forums.
Well, thank the Lord. This was such an annoyance!
I agree. Now I don’t have to worry about my email box being overwhelmed with emails from WordPress. And I don’t need to keep checking if somebody has responded to a comment I’ve left on their post.
Amen!
