April 24, 2023, prompt: Write a story about the colour of hope in 99 words (no more, no less). Who needs hope, and why? How can you use colour to shape the story? Pick a colour, any colour. Go where the prompt leads! See April 24: Story Challenge in 99-words for more details.

Where There Is Hope – by Hugh W. Roberts

As the Pride Parade approached, the city streets were awash with every rainbow colour. But for Tim, a young, closeted bisexual man, only one colour truly embodied the spirit of hope – Green. It was the colour of his first love’s eyes and the hope he carried for a world that accepted and celebrated all identities.

As he watched the march, he knew he was not alone. Many diversities watched the parade while waving rainbow flags. Together, they would fight for a future where every colour of love was accepted.

Hope always won over the hatred for being different.

A beautiful flash. I especially loved: “every colour of love”. May it be as you have written, hope winning over hatred.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I do hope so, D. But still a lot of work to do to eliminate the hate.

Great story, Hugh. I hope that love can conquer hatred everywhere – soon!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I hope so, Norah. A world without hate towards others who are different would be a wonderful place to live.

      1. Norah avatar

        Wouldn’t it just! 💖

A great tale to underscore our differences a day ultimately our similarities. Well done, Hugh.

This is beautiful. I truly believe hope always wins over hatred.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you, Jennie. Yes, it does. But there is still much work to be done to eliminate hatred towards others simply because they are different.

      1. Jennie avatar

Yes, indeed! I get to teach this to children every day. Best to you, Hugh.

“What people in the world think of you is really none of your business.” ― Martha Graham

Nice post, Hugh. Life’s too short to not be what one wants to be.💖

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That is very true, Eugi. But we must remember that some people cannot live their lives as they want to. There is still much work to eliminate discrimination and hate towards others simply for being different. The work continues.

Hugh! I love what you write already. But THIS!! Sent chills down my spine! As a mother of a transgender child, I hope, pray, wish and worry all at the same time about how my daughter is going to weather this societal defect if something doesn’t change. Thank you for such an amazing piece about something so important.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you. I’m glad the 99 words in this piece of flash had that effect on you. I returned to how I felt when I saw my first pride march while writing it. It was a moment of my life that gave me so much hope knowing I was not alone in this big wide world.

People have been too outspoken for too long and have no right to meddle in other’s affairs. A famous author once quipped:

“Do what you want and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” -Dr. Seuss …

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I like that quote a lot. It speaks volumes.

      1. Linda Schaub avatar

Yes Hugh and a lot of people don’t think of Dr. Seuss as a deep thinker, more of a children’s book author. That is one of my favorite quotes and this is another “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”

We get so few moments of complete joy – caught well Hugh. You are not alone!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you. When we are with those who love us no matter who we are, joy surrounds us.

This is a lovely post, Hugh. I can tell your words came from your heart.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Thank you so much. I wrote it while thinking about myself in those early days of fearing to ‘come out.’

Not uniformity, but diversity is what we all have in common.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Indeed. It’s a shame that not everyone agrees, though.

Times are changing. There is no other way.

          100% with you there, Erika.

  13. Dan Antion avatar

This world needs hope, Hugh. Nicely done!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

It does, Dan. As much as possible.

  14. Bridgette avatar

This is beautiful. I pray we can see a day when everyone is accepted, but it feels like everything is moving so backwards right now. Makes me angry and sad.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

We’ve come a long way, but I agree there is a lot of work still to be done, especially in countries where it is still a crime to be LGBTQI.
I’m glad you enjoyed this piece of flash, Bridgette.
