   Very exquisite looking chess set Hugh. I have never played chess, checkers yes, never chess. I like how you used black and white for this photo. Very nice.

   Here is my Wordless Wednesday post … slowly we are morphing into Spring, but still drab looking with no flowers yet. These poor Snowdrops bloomed in February and have endured ice storms, snow storms, torrential rain and heavy winds and still look good.

   Bewildered and bedraggled Snowdrops. Angry Robin bemoaning frozen worms.  #Wordless Wednesday  #Weary from Winter #3 years of Wordless Wednesdays for me!

      I don’t know many people who play chess, Linda. And of the ones I do know, they’re all men. Even in the chess club, I was a part of at school, it was all boys. The girls did not seem very interested in the game. Nowadays, I don’t know of any young people who play chess.

         Alas, chess is not something they can play online, so I’m guessing it is a dying skill … it’s not really a hobby, so you have to have skill and be strategic to play. And it takes a lot of patience, which young people may not have as they are used to a digital, fast-paced world as that’s all they’ve ever known.

   Hi Hugh, nice photo!! It looks like a place I would like to sit and relax. It’s been a long time since I played chess. When I learned I learned from players who were great at the game. When I finally was able to win playing them it was such a good feeling. When I was a teen-ager my paternal grandfather played chess (I never got to play him.) Any man that came into his home was challenged to a game of chess. He had a pretty chess set and chairs set up in the living room that stayed there. My husband actually knew him before him and I met and they did play a few games of chess.

   Anyway, too much rambling. That’s a beautiful photo. Take care.

      It was a delightful small hotel, Lea. We stayed in February (a few years ago), so it was quiet, but I like it that way.

      Thank you for sharing the chess story about your grandfather. Did he ever challenge any women to a game of chess, or was it just men?

      How nice that he played chess with your future husband.

         I like those small hotels too, Hugh. The service is probably better (maybe) because everyone doesn’t get lost in numbers if you know what I mean.

         You know Hugh, I don’t know if my grandfather ever challenged a woman to a game of chess or not. I don’t think he did. I think it was a way for him to “show off” to men he met, but I could be wrong about that. He was a gruff and sometimes grumpy kind of guy, but never, ever with me. He was gruff with his other grandchildren and his own children but was softer with me. He lived to be 99.

            I wonder if it were a sign of the times as to why he never challenged a woman to play chess? How things have changed since then.

   My father was a big Chess fan. He would always try to get me to play when I was younger. Kind of wish that I had gotten interested in the game and spent more time playing the game with him while I had the chance. Unfortunately, that opportunity has been lost.
   He would play the game with two of my older brothers, so at least he had somebody to play the game with. I was one of those kids who couldn’t sit still long enough for a game like that.
   You’re post here just gave me an idea for another post I could write, so thanks’ for that.

      I recall there being a chess club at school, so that’s how I got started. However, it did not last long, so I had to revert to playing chess with my grandfather.
      Thanks for sharing your chess story. And I’m delighted that the photo has generated an idea for a post.

      It was a charming little hotel, Terri. The room where I found this chess set was terrific. It was full of oddments. I could have spent hours there, but I decided to try and find somebody to challenge me to a game of chess. Playing chess is a great way to wash away all the stresses and strains life can bring.
