Meet Hugh

Hello and a very warm welcome to my blog.

Hello, my name is Hugh, and I live in Swansea, in the UK.

I write about all kinds of everyday life and what it brings to us all. Nothing too serious, most of the time just about the little things in life and how important they can be to all of us. Some of my posts will be humorous, while others may bring a tear to the eye.

I have always enjoyed writing, and the fact I suffer from a mild form of dyslexia has not stopped me from enjoying the passion I have for writing. Yes, I get things wrong with my reading and writing, but I always find those mistakes humorous and always laugh about it. I no longer allow dyslexia get in my way.

Now in my fifties, I thought it about time I let my writing become public. Becoming a blogger seemed to be the perfect way for me to do this. Blogging has put me in touch with hundreds of other writers, many of whom have been supportive and helped me with my writing.

I’m a member of the committee of the Bloggers Bash, a group set up to organise annual get-togethers for all bloggers. Held in London, we’re about to hold our fourth event in 2018. Click here to find out more details.

I lead a happy life and always try to stay positive. I share my life with John, my wonderful civil partner, and our two Welsh Cardigan Corgis, Toby and Austin.

I write about life because I find it so fascinating. I have many stories to tell, some of which I have started to put into a book. I think my life has been incredible and I want to share it with anyone that wants to listen. I am also an excellent listener, and I love to be interactive with other people. I guess you could say I am a ‘people person’.

You will find some of my short stories, flash fiction, and poetry on my blog and I hope you enjoy reading them. Flash Fiction has become a big part of my writing, and I enjoy participating in various writing challenges.

I also write articles giving free blogging and social media tips. These articles have proved very popular. I’ve learned lots about the blogging world since I started to blog, and my free tips are a way of thanking everyone that supports my blog by visiting, reading and commenting on my posts. Click on ‘Blogging Tips’ on the menu bar at the top of my blog to see all the blogging tips posts I have published.

I’m delighted to announce that my first collection of short stories is now available on Amazon. The book is called ‘Glimpses’ and is available as both a paperback and an eBook. The Kindle version is now only 99p.

Glimpses - My new book of some of my short stories. Available now on Kindle and as a paperback.

    1. Thank you for taking a look around. I remember when I first started to blog and how I read any blogging tips posts I could find. I’ve learned a lot since coming here (and am still learning), and I do enjoy sharing what I have found out with others. Happy blogging. 😀

    2. Hello Mr Hugh W. Roberts,

Like D. Avery, I finally forked out some time to visit your blog, which contains a great number of posts, most of which also contain plentiful comments. I feel quite overwhelmed and wonder how old this excellent blog is, considering its voluminous contents and how dedicated you have been in maintaining the blog.

I would like to wish you and your family a wonderful festive season and a happy new year.
      Happy 2018! 🙂

      1. Thank you so much for your comment and for visiting my blog.

In answer to your question, I started this blog in February 2014. I soon became a passionate blogger, and my secret to why I am still blogging is because I enjoy it so much and keep it all about fun and enjoyment. I don’t allow it to stress me out or make me feel guilty.

Thank you for leaving a link to your blog. As I don’t allow links on this page, I have had to remove it, but you are welcome to leave the link over on this post where I have invited bloggers and authors to leave links.

Happy New Year to you. ✨

  1. Hi Hugh. I found your blog through the Weekly Photo Challenge and immediately recognised your cover photo of Swansea. I grew up in Bishopston and rarely come across other bloggers from that part of the world! My resolution this year was to write more about the wonderful hikes I enjoy on the Gower…although seem to have got a bit bogged down in Italy recently!
    Happy blogging 🙂

    1. Hi Rachel. It’s great to meet you. Thanks for coming over to my blog. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in person a handful of other bloggers from Wales. I used to live in Brighton, where there were a lot more bloggers based. I’m still discovering the Swansea and Gower areas but enjoying every moment. It’s a fabulous place.

      1. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying it! I’ve been living in London for the past few years and every time I go back to visit family I try to squeeze in some beach time 🙂 One of my favourite things to do is to take a picnic up to Pennard Castle – what a view!

      1. Absolutely. Same here, although the red hair started fading a few years ago. 😀 Can’t stay out in the sun very long either. Being fair skinned, I burn very easily, even with factor 50 suncream on. 🌞
I know Cardiff quite well. It’s had a lot of new development over the last ten years. Now, an even better place to shop, eat and socialize.

      2. :)…the sun is definitely not our friend, living here in South Florida is not easy and as you say even the strongest sun screen does not do the trick. I visited Wales only once…it is beautiful.

      1. I speak to a lot of people who let dyslexia or the fact that English is not their first language stop them. They don’t know that it’s what adds colour to their posts because it’s part of who they are which makes them charmingly unique amongst the rest of us. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Laura. So pleased to hear that my blogging tips posts are being so helpful. I will have been blogging for four years next month and I’ve still lots to learn about the blogging world. I will happily carry on sharing what I find out. 😀

  2. Hello Hugh, I’ve had a lovely time reading your posts, you clearly know your stuff and you’re very encouraging. I’ve thought about starting a blog on and off for a year or so and even given it a go but the start up advice is so confusing! Is it best to start with WordPress, get a host or self host?? What did you do? I may have missed it in your posts but can you direct me to a good step by step start up guide? Many thanks for your lovely writing, Rhona

    1. Hi Rhona. Thanks for visiting my blog and for your questions.

I’ve always stuck with having a WordPress blog rather than going self-hosted. I would recommend you try blogging using one of the free WordPress themes to start with and see how you get on. Then, you can always upgrade your blog plan if you’re finding you are enjoying blogging. I’ve never gone self-hosted because I’ve always been happy with using WordPress. If anything goes wrong with my blog then I know I can rely on their support staff to sort out the problem for me. I’ve always found them very helpful and professional.

You can’t go wrong by doing some of the free online courses that WordPress offer. Here’s a link to the details of what they offer.

I’ve done a few of these courses and found them to be excellent. Don’t waste your money on paying for a course as the free ones that WordPress offer are excellent.

      I hope that helps?
