Meet Hugh

Hello, and a very warm welcome to my blog.

My name is Hugh. I live in the city of Swansea, South Wales, in the United Kingdom.

My blog covers a wide range of subjects, the most popular of which are my blogging tips posts. I’ve learned a lot about the world of blogging since I first came here in February 2014. All of the tips and advice I give are free of charge and will cost you nothing apart from a little bit of your time.

I have always enjoyed writing, and the fact I suffer from a mild form of dyslexia has not stopped me from enjoying the passion I have for writing.

Now in my fifties, I thought it about time I let my writing become public. Becoming a blogger seemed to be the perfect way for me to do this. Blogging has put me in touch with hundreds of other writers, many of whom have been supportive and helped me with my writing.

More about Hugh

I lead a happy life and always try to stay positive. I share my life with John, my civil partner, and our two Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Toby and Austin.

Austin and Toby.

I write about life because I find it so fascinating. I have many stories to tell, some of which I have started to put into a book. I think my life has been incredible and I want to share it with anyone who wants to listen. I enjoy being interactive with people. I guess you could say I am a ‘people person’.

You will find some of my short stories and flash fiction on my blog, and I hope you enjoy reading them. Flash Fiction has become a big part of my writing, and I enjoy participating in various writing challenges.

New Blogging Schedule

I’m now only publishing new blog posts once a week. Instead of publish numerous blog posts per week, I took the decision to take my time and work on writing one post a week.

This started at the end of July 2019, and has proved to be the perfect blogging balance for me.

Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint!

Blogging and Social Media Tips

As I mentioned earlier, I also write articles giving free blogging and social media tips. Click on the ‘Blogging Tips’ and ‘Gutenberg – How To’ buttons on the menu bar to access all my articles. These articles have proved very popular. My free tips are a way of thanking everyone that supports my blog by visiting, reading and commenting on my posts.

If you have any questions about blogging, let me know what they are. I may respond with a brand new post that could feature you and your blog.

Blogging Awards and Tags

As much as I appreciate being nominated for blogging awards and tagged in blog posts, I took the decision a few years ago for my blog to become ‘award free’ and to no longer participate in ‘tagging’ posts on here or on social media. You can read why I took this decision by clicking here. However, I’d like to thank everybody who has (and who still does) nominated me.

Book Reviews

I have also taken the decision to no longer publish book reviews on my blog, so please do not send me any requests to review books. You will find lots of book review blogs and book bloggers on WordPress and other blogging platforms. Please save yourself some time and send your book review requests to them rather than to me.

My Books

My first collection of short stories is available on Amazon. Glimpses is available as both a paperback and an eBook and contains 28 short stories and flash fiction full of twists, turns, and unexpected endings. The Kindle version is 99p.

  1. Hello, Hugh. (my husband’s name too) My son has dyslexia which wasn’t diagnosed until he was an adult, and it has been the bane of his life. He struggled through school. The saddest thing was that he couldn’t read to his sons. But not long ago I sent the boys Michael Morpurgo’s book, The War Horse, and to my delight my son told me he nearly missed his stop going home because he was reading it before he gave it to the boys. And now he is reading big books. If only we knew about it when he was at school.
Thank you for listening to my tale. Barbara

    1. Hello Barbara, and thank you for telling me your son’s story.
It was the same for me at school. The condition was never really taken seriously and it was always thought that I was just slow. Even in my early career, I encountered problems but I’m so pleased now that the condition is recognized and that there are support groups and help for those with the condition. I love to write and I’m so glad that having dyslexia no longer stops me from writing.
      Best wishes,
      Hugh

    1. That’s very kind of you, Jean, thank you. I hope your daughter is conquering her dyslexia monster. It took a lot of encouragement for me to even think about it, but I’m so glad I took those steps.

      1. She did. She became a successful financial adviser. Later she decided to go back to school and is now an elementary school teacher. She loves helping other kids with similar problems develop a love for reading.

  2. Happy to have connected with you Hugh and look forward to getting to know you through your blog. Love what I’ve seen so far and I look forward to taking part in more of your challenges and reading your wonderful posts. Cheers!

  3. Hi Hugh. I found your blog thanks to Cee linking your photo challenge. I’ve been reading some of your blogging tips and will have a look at more of your blog.
Thanks for visiting and following Flying Goannas and The 3rd Drawer Down. I’ve neglected my blogs a bit lately so am playing catch-up a bit. I hope you enjoy my travels and my other bits and pieces.
    Cheers.
    Jenny.

    1. Well, my thanks to Cee, for pointing you in the direction of my blog, and to you for following my blog, Jenny. It’s a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to becoming a part of your blogging community.
      Best wishes,
      Hugh

    1. Hi Claudette. Thanks so much for thinking of me for this challenge. I’ve already completed it twice so I hope you don’t mind me passing it by. Have fun with it and I look forward to seeing what quotes you come up with over the three days.

        1. I agree, Claudette. Some of these challenges have the same layout as the awards. They can be fun to do at first, but they to can lose their sparkle when they keep coming in. I prefer challenges where there is no having to pass the challenge on. However, in the early days of blogging, some of these challenges are great for networking with other bloggers and for gaining followers.

  4. A pleasure to meet you Hugh. We share a passion for writing and blogging so I look forward to reading more of your posts. I will also check out the links you provided as I am always keen to meet other authors. And thanks for visiting and following my blog!

    1. Hi Bev, it’s a pleasure to meet you as well. I found your blog through Sherri Matthews. I’m so glad she posted those photos of the graveyard this week which had the link to your blog. I love anything to do with the unexplained and am looking forward to reading your posts. Those orb photos were fascinating.

Thanks for the follow and welcome to my blogging community.

      Best wishes,
      Hugh

  5. Nice blog with a lot of interesting posts. I especially like your corgi. I had a much loved pembroke corgi mix up to a couple of years ago. I have a special place in my heart for all corgis now.
    –Joan 🙂

    1. Thank you Joan. Toby has been quite a hit here on my blog. He publishes the occasional post and seems to get far more fan mail than I do 🙂 It’s a shame that the Corgi is now on the list of endangered breeds of dogs here ink the UK.

    1. Matt, thank you so much for nominating me for this award.

I decided earlier this year for my blog to go ‘award free’ (see the link below).

      https://hughsviewsandnews.com/2015/02/22/forget-about-the-oscars-welcome-to-the-mildreds/

It was a hard decision to make and I still get nominations coming in which I am very honoured about. I did lots of posts about Award nominations during my first year here on WordPress and then found that I was not able to find the time to accept nominations and write posts about them. So I came to the decision to go ‘award free’.

Nevertheless, thank you very much for the nomination and for thinking about my blog when giving out your nominations.

      Best wishes,
      Hugh

        1. Thanks Matt. It was, and the Awards posts are a great way to get to know other bloggers. However, as you build up your following they can become very time-consuming. It was a hard decision to make but I’m delighted to say that the award nomination posts I did accept put me in touch with some great blogs.

          Have a great day.

  6. It is very nice to meet you, Hugh. I am looking forward to wandering about your blog. I really like your philosophy of life and try to maintain a positive outlook myself. Thank you for stopping by my blog

    1. Hi Nancy, thank you so much for your lovely comments. Welcome to my blogging community. I hope you’ll join in and meet all the lovely community I have here. They are a great bunch of people and I know they will welcome you as much as I do.
      Best wishes,
      Hugh

    1. Thank you so much for nominating me for this award. I am both deeply touch and honoured that you thought of me when nominating other bloggers.

However, I decided to let my blog go award free earlier this year. Here’s a link to the post detailing why I made that decision.

      https://hughsviewsandnews.com/2015/02/22/forget-about-the-oscars-welcome-to-the-mildreds/

Once again, thank you so much for thinking of me. I wish you every success in the blogging world.

      Best wishes,
      Hugh 🙂

    1. Hi Hollie, and welcome to my blogging community. You are very welcome here and I hope you get to meet some other of my followers as well. They are a great bunch of people.

      A big “woof!” from Toby.

  7. Hello there! I have just nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. Congratulations and thank you for all of your wonderful and thoughtful comments you have placed on my stories. Your own written words are what have captivated my interest and I look forward to finding out more about you through this award. Congratulations my little blogging friend! 🙂

    1. Hi Belinda, thank you so much for the award nomination. I am very honoured that you have thought of me when nominating other bloggers.

Unfortunately my blog went award free back in February this year. Here is the link to the post I wrote about it.

      https://hughsviewsandnews.com/2015/02/22/forget-about-the-oscars-welcome-to-the-mildreds/

However, I really appreciate you thinking about my blog when you nominated other bloggers. Congratulations on your award.
      Best wishes,
      Hugh

      1. I’m so sorry I missed that when I checked! Sorry Hugh … that’s my fault for not looking properly! (lol … you still have your internet connection! 🙂

        1. No problem at all Belinda. I’ve been meaning to put a notice on the front page of my blog about awards but I am always honoured when ever anybody nominates me. It is such a wonderful gesture and when I did accept awards I always remember the wonderful feeling I got when I was mentioned, so thank you again for thinking about me. I really do appreciate it.

Yes, I’ve managed to find a way to stay connected to the internet…for now! I’m not sure how long it is going to last but I am keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

  8. It happens all the time. I promise myself that I can not take on any more bloggers to follow. Then a post shows up, and I remember seeing comments by this same person on bloggers I’ve loved and followed for a while. That would be you, Hugh. ☺ Thank you for that, I look forward to exploring your posts. Van

    1. What a lovely comment, Van. Thank you so much. I really appreciate hearing all of that.

Ensuring we visit bloggers as often as we can is tricky when we follow so many. I tend to visit those first who support me the most, then those who visit every once and in a while and then, if I have any time left, those who never visit (even though they may follow me).

    1. Steve, I don’t like it. No, I absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to do my little bit of BGT on you there, but you get the Gold buzzer treatment from me for this.

Am I allowed to use it on my blog? Of course, I’ll give you full credit for it so it may even bring you over some traffic.

      1. Oh my god I fell for the BGT treatment there and my heart literally sank for a second lol! I’m so glad you like…nae…love it 🙂 Let me know if you want any changes made as that was just a first attempt and I’d be so flattered if you decide to use it on your blog 🙂 🙂

        1. Lol, sorry for the early particle joke.

Changes – well here are some. I like the picture you have used. I see you got it from my ‘about me’ page. Can you add it on some of the other pinned bits of paper and post-it notes that you have added? Say about three of them?

Can you add ‘&’ between the ‘Views’ and ‘News’. Can you change Hugh to Hugh’s?

I do want to use it. I may change to a new theme and use it as the banner across the top of my blog (the current one does not allow that), or I will put in on the widget bar (currently on the righthand side of my blog page.)

Thanks Steve, I’m really pleased what you came up with.

        2. Love it!

Thanks, Steve. I’ll certainly be using it. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for me. I really appreciate it.

I’ll see you at your party on Saturday (if not before).
