November 7, 2023, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about waiting. Where does this waiting take place? Does it have a past or a future outcome? Who is waiting and why? Go where the prompt leads!

Waiting For Who? – by Hugh W. Roberts

I’d been waiting for hours. Why was I here?

‘You’ll soon find out,’ said a voice in my head.

I’d sat on every chair. All were uncomfortable. I paced up and down, breathing in the heavy air of dread.

“Mr Roberts?” a voice whispered. “Follow me.”

I had no idea where the handsome nurse had come from, but I followed him.

“This is it,” he said, ushering me into a room.

A dim light lit up a figure in the bed, covered in a white sheet.

I approached and pulled back the sheet.

My face stared back at me.

So creepy, Hugh. A surprise ending – that’s no surprise. :)

Thanks, Norah. Glad you found the creepiness in it.

        So unexpected. Not! 😉😂

That’s music to my ears, Cathy.

A great twist to the agony of all that waiting, Hugh! Sure made me think!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m glad it got you thinking, Terri. I’ve always found that if I’m waiting too long, whatever it is I’m waiting for will turn out to come with a bit of a shock.

  4. Dan Antion avatar

You had me right until the end.

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

      That’s excellent to hear, Dan.

    What a nightmare!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Yes, one that you can never wake up from.

Creepy, Hugh! I hope you’ll never write a story about me. It wouldn’t end well… But, it would make for good reading. :)

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

Now, there’s a challenge, Liesbet. Although I do like to shock readers with my story endings, I can sometimes travel down the happy ending road.

        I have noticed that… :)

Great ending – but spooky! I was wondering who was under that sheet!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m glad you never guessed who it was.

  9. lifelessons avatar

Sounds like a nightmare. It would actually make a good beginning, as well!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s a great way of looking at it. I rather like stories where the ending can also be the beginning.

  10. WebbBlogs avatar

You got me, definitely wasn’t expecting that ending!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

That’s great. I wasn’t sure it was an ending that the majority would have got, but so far, it seems not.

  11. Dave Williams avatar

What a twist at the end!

    1. Hugh W. Roberts avatar

I’m glad you think so. I wasn’t sure it would work, but I went with it.

    Wow! A great ending.
