Omg that looks so freekin scary and amazing haha !
Looks, yes, but not as scary as I thought when I stepped onto the glass platform.
Spectacular views!
They were.
That’s an amazing shot of the Grand Canyon Hugh. I know I’ve seen pictures of that overlook – I would try it, but maybe scurry over to the edge, take a photo, then head back to a safer place. I am sure they bolster it, so there’s no way that overlook could break off, but last year at one of the Metroparks they had yellow caution tape and orange cones around an overlook and signs to “BEWARE”. I learned that the overlook started breaking away from the earth – it jutted out over the Huron River. I had been on it a few years ago with a sketching group. There are an amazing number of people who go to Grand Canyon or places that are on mountains and take selfies and are not mindful of surroundings and fall off the edge. I was in the Grand Canyon when I was young – maybe 9-10, long before this nice overlook was built.
Here is my Wordless Wednesday:

I was shocked by how many people ventured to the edge and looked over, Linda. The platform was different because you had something to hold on to, but standing directly at the edge of those cliffs and looking over was something I could never bring myself to do.
The platform was made of glass (including the floor) so you could look straight down. Quite an amazing sight. Health and safety were top priorities while walking around the platform.
Interesting … I thought the floor was glass. I read about it awhile ago, but could not remember the details. What an incredible view you would have. No, I could not get that close to the edge of the cliffs either – too risky. They could crumble, you could be startled by a sudden loud noise and when startled could lose your balance. People being thrill seekers leads to their detriment sometimes.
Is this a cliff or desert
It’s both.
Ah, Hugh. I was fine with heights until the day I was working as a roofer and I slid right off. Ever since then, I’ve been queasy whenever I’m near the edge. So I think it’s a no for me. But I will say that since I’m 8 hours away I have thought to go RVing there. And when I looked up falls into the Grand Canyon, I was surprised to find that 100 people a year fall into the Grand Canyon.
I don’t blame you for being queasy after slipping off that roof, Will. I’m ok if I have something to hold on to when looking over the edge, but when there is nothing there to stop you from falling over, I stay well back.
100 people a year fall into Grand Canyon! That’s such a high number. I can’t imagine what it must be like watching it happen.
I love the colours! Great views I’m sure.
The views were amazing, Wayne. Even when looking through the glass floor.
Yes I’m sure but don’t think I could look through the glass floor!
I didn’t think I could, but having something to hold on to helped.
Amazing Hugh! Good on you!
One word for your wordless post: Nope!
Fair enough. It’s not for everyone. I was shocked that I had tried it. But I’m glad I did.
I really don’t mind heights, but I need to have my feet on solid ground. I bet the view was amazing though.
They were. Even when looking through that glass floor.
Hi Hugh, wow!! You took that photo? Where was that taken? If so how high were you standing when you took it? I’m afraid of heights, but natural heights don’t scare me, as much. But that manmade ledge, oh no, no, no. Those folks are braver than I am. Did you go stand on that too? It sure is pretty though, as I sit safely in my chair. 🙂
Many years ago, before my husband and I were married we were at a country fair. We went on a ride that was like a ferris wheel but more people could sit in it and it was a round seating area (this probably isn’t a clear description.) I was petrified. Why I got on that thing in the first place I’ll never know. I was holding on to the center circle for dear life, feeling like a fool. Then a little kid said “Are you afraid?” Now that’s funny. It was scary, but that was funny.
Yes, this photo was taken by me, Lea. I was feeling brave that day. I was happier taking photos than posing for them. Just look at that guy having his picture taken with his back turned to the cliff’s edge. I rather him than me standing on that rock. Some people were so close to the edge of the cliffs that my heart jumped into my stomach. At least on the glass platform, you had something to hold on to.
Whenever I was on a Ferris wheel (or the big wheel) at a fair, I always hated it when we stopped at the top. I always ended up closing my eyes until we got to the bottom. I think younger children have less fear than we adults. As a teenager, I could watch any scary movie without getting petrified. Now, anything scary has me hiding behind cushions.
Oh my gosh, Hugh. I hadn’t noticed the guy standing with his back to the cliff’s edge because I couldn’t take my eyes off the people on the manmade ledge. Scary!! You certainly were brave.
I so get what you mean about closing your eyes when the big wheel stopped at the top, especially when the cage would swing back and forth.
My knees go weak at times like that.
If you can stand another story, my husband and I were at an amusement park in Florida. I hate roller coasters and once again will never know what possessed me to get on one of those things with my husband. But I did. When the big bar came down to lock me in I knew that ride was a serious ride. I think I may have said a few choice words at that moment. When the ride started it went backwards and up a very TALL flagpole type of thing, minus the flag. Then it kind of stayed there for a moment and we were looking straight down. That’s when I closed my eyes and they stayed that way for the ride. When we used to go to amusement parks my husband loved those crazy rides.
When we were in Las Vegas, I rode the rollercoaster with my niece. I’d never heard such bad language from my niece as the ride went around. Thank goodness nobody else was on the ride. She did apologise when we got to the end. I couldn’t help but laugh.
When I was there the platform hadn’t been built, so even more reason to visit again!
Glad you loved it.
It was an experience I will never forget, Paul. I was more frightened at standing on the glass floor and looking down at the Shard in London.

Hugh, I got dizzy looking at the photo! So, NO. I’d take pics from safer ground and zoom in. Or buy postcards! Nice that you enjoyed the experience. 😊 Christine
It was a wonderful experience, Christine. I’m glad we did the tour. The Grand Canyon is an amazing place.
Outstanding view and yes I will go and stand there to get the best view ever. Love it and that’s a spectacular view. The same when we (husband) were still flying. My entry for today: https://esmesalon.com/aeroplanes/ – not my husband flying this one.
I enjoyed the freedom and now that we can not do that anymore, this is the next best to flying and being out there in the open universe.
The views were amazing, Esme. And walking and standing on the glass platform is an experience I will never forget.
I wouldn’t even be those people standing close to the edge let alone stand out on that thing. Oh, wow! Vertigo kicks in just looking at that picture!
Here’s my WW Post. It’s a bit wetter on the ground. LOL!

It does look scary. At least on the platform, there was something to hang on to. Whereas looking over the edge of the cliffs was a no-no.
I’ll have to take your word for it.
If I got the chance Hugh I’d give it a go…did you? 💜
Yes, we ventured out on the glass platform, Willow. An amazing experience.
Oh! I bet it was amazing 💜
I hadn’t seen this view of the Grand Canyon, Hugh, so another trip is in order! Wow, great shot! I would be out there in a second looking over the platform and snapping pics under my feet. No doubt if I wanted to hang my feet over the ledge, the park rangers would roll their eyes and then pull me away! 🙂 I guess I’ve spent so much time hiking on mountain trails, I can handle heights OK.
We had to put protection cloth over our shoes to walk on the glass platform, Terri. But the views looking down and over the platform were terrific. Not quite the same standing near the edge of the cliffs with nothing to hold on to, though. Some people were so close to the edge that my heart was in my mouth just watching them.
A photographer’s dream for sure! Good idea there was shoe protection for the glass. I meant to ask is this at the South Rim?
I’m not sure, Terri. It was an organised tour, and I can’t remember. We had a choice of a tour that included a helicopter ride to the bottom of the canyon or a tour that took in the glass platform.
I Googled it–on the West Rim closer to Lake Mead, which is close to Vegas. Very cool! A tour sounds like a good idea, Hugh!
We were staying in Vegas when we visited. Thanks for looking it up, Terri.
Sure, and that makes sense. I’ll have to remember that!
Absolutely! What a view!
It was wonderful. Such a beautiful part of the world to visit.
Been there and I do agree! Breath-taking!
I’ve been to the Grand Canyon but not at this spot. I would be a bit leary of going on the glass platform.
I was, at first, but once on it, it was a spectacular view when looking through the glass floor.
Oh my goodness, I could not stand near that edge.
Me neither, Cathy. Some people sat right on the edge having their photos taken. Yikes.
Makes my stomach turn over just thinking about it.
This platform is a little scary.
It was, especially given that the floor was made of glass. You could look straight down.
NO WAY I would step on it!
Nope
