51 Weeks: 51 Songs From The Past: Week 38: Pet Shop Boys – Go West

When was the last time you had a dance? No, I’m not asking you to dance with me, because my music time machine is far too small to turn into a dance floor and, besides, I haven’t unpacked the flashing lights or the smoke machine. I wasn’t planning on unpacking them until we celebrate the end of this feature, in December, once our musical playlist is complete. In the meantime, hold on to your hats because we’re about to celebrate as we land in the year 1993.

51 weeks 51 songs from the past poster

Go back to week four of this feature, and those of you who have been with me since the start of this journey may remember our encounter with the Village People. This week’s featured song was a big hit for them in the 1970s, but we’re about to watch another version of the song sang by British pop duo the Pet Shop Boys.

Go West was the Pet Shop Boys biggest hit in the UK and Germany in the 1990s. Making it to number two in the UK and number one in Germany, the song also became the duo’s last of four number one hits in Ireland. It performed far better in Europe than it did around the rest of the world, although the video was nominated for a Grammy award.

For its time, the video was way ahead of many others with it relying heavily on computer graphics. However, the following year would see the release of the PlayStation, which somewhat reminds me of the way some of the games looked when you compare them to the video of Go West.

Did I mention a celebration earlier on? Yes, I did. 24 years ago, Go West was the first song I danced to with my now civil partner. That first dance was the spark that set us off on a journey I’m so happy we’re still and always will be on. Happy Anniversary, John. 🥂

This photo was taken at our civil partnership in 2006.

  2. Hugh I absolutely LOVED the Pet Shop Boys back in the day! I used to play West End Girls over and over till it drove my poor mum mad! 🤣 Although it has to be said, I’m no dancer, I just don’t really enjoy it… unless I’m drunk!

  3. Hi Hugh,
Congratulations on your anniversary. Anthony, my husband, and I celebrated our thirty-fourth on September 9. We will be legally married three years in December. Ironically, Anthony and I met in San Antonio, Texas in a country western bar that I frequented call Snuffy’s. I wish I had the recall you do and could remember the song of our first dance. All I remember was it was a waltz. Ahhh memories. Thanks for sharing yours. HUGS

  4. Happy anniversary old fella! If we are talking cheesy first dances with the current Mrs Le Pard it would have been ‘If You Leave me Now’ by Chicago.

If we are talking best Pet Shop Boys songs then Suburbia…

      1. First clinch on our first date. It will always be memorable for me though she says she doesn’t remember and thinks it was either Procul Harem or The Moody Blues. Hmpf as if I’d get that wrong!!

  5. What a wonderful way to remember your anniversary, Hugh! Congratulations! Fun song, I vaguely remember hearing or seeing it on MTV. I don’t have a specific song for when my hubby and I first danced, but it was likely some Latin Guitar song 🙂

  6. Happy Anniversary, what a great picture to share, Hugh ! I liked the song, and the video was ahead of its time. Our favorite was Chicago’s “Color My World”, made sure they played it at our wedding. But I also remember my first slow dance, about 5th grade, “Ebb Tide” by the Righteous Brothers.

  7. Love this song and your story behind it Hugh!
Mine was a bollywood track but I think I’d love a bit of Bob Marley and One Love if we were to do it again!!!!

  8. That’s a very innovative video, considering the year! It’s a great song! Happy Anniversary to you both- what a great picture!!! 🙂 I’m not familiar with this song at all- but it does sound like a good “first dance” song.

  9. Love the Pet Shop Boys, Hugh and this is a great choice. What a gorgeous picture of you and John, Happy anniversary to you both.
My song choice this week is one that is special to me and Mr Grump. My brother-in-law (Mr Musician) performed it for us at our wedding.

  10. Love this song and what it means to you! Our first dance at our Wedding was a waltz, in those days we did as we were told by our parents and they wanted a waltz! So 46yrs ago we did a waltz no idea which one because it was not my scene!
No if I could choose a first dance it would not be from then it would be the wonderful Lambarda!
