Book Of The Month – An Angel Among Us – by J. E. Spina @janice_spina

Welcome to this month’s Book Of The Month Feature. I’m delighted to welcome Janice Spina for the first time to my blog, although I did review one of her books last year. You can read the review by clicking here.

Over to you, Janice…

What’s the name of the book?

An Angel Among Us (A Short Story Collection)

The new short story collection from Janice Spina

What inspired you to write it?

I connected online with a friend I hadn’t seen since five years after high school. She had lost her husband and was dying from breast cancer. My heart went out to her, and I wanted to do something, so I dedicated the first story of this collection to my friend which is also the title of the book. I sent her the story I wrote for her, but unfortunately, my dear friend died before I could send her the completed book. I somehow feel that she is looking down on it and loving it.

How long did it take you to write it?

I began writing it before Christmas in 2016 and completed it in March of 2017.

Tell us a little about the stories and the characters.

This is an eclectic collection of genres including romance, grief/loss, fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, mystery and suspense. The characters are varied with strong women, some dysfunctional personalities, a woman who is psychologically battered, a maniacal clown that will keep you up at night, a few tear jerkers, a romance with a comical twist, a fairy tale with a surprise, a suspense with a hint of horror, a case of obsession, a tale of magic with a supernatural flair and a Christmas story that grips the heart. There is something for all reading tastes.

Who do you think the book will appeal to?

Since it covers so many different genres, it will appeal to all readers in one way or another.

Do you have any plans for a follow-up book?

I had so much fun writing these stories that I was thinking of writing another collection with multi genres maybe next year.

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I was nine years old in the form of poetry and greeting cards. I began writing short stories for children when I was in my twenties.

Where do your ideas for your stories come from?

My ideas come to me in everyday life, in my dreams, in the shower, or while I am taking a walk with my husband.

When, where, and how often do you write?

I write in some form every day whether I am blogging, answering emails or writing a new story. If I am into a new story, I try to write a chapter a day until it is completed. Some days I may do more than a chapter when I miss out on writing other days due to family responsibilities.

What do you think the future holds for you and your books and what plans do have for future books?

I always tease my family and friends about my goal to write and publish 25 books before I leave this world. Now at 15 books, I am raising my goal to 40. I plan to be around for a long time to complete this goal (hopefully)!

I am presently working on Book 5 of my Davey & Derek Series and will do a spin off for girls next year. I plan to write a sequel to my first novel, Hunting Mariah after I do a re-editing of the original book. My husband/illustrator, John, is working on a children’s book about a giraffe. There will always be more to come from Jemsbooks – books for all ages. Like I always say: Reading Gives You Wings to Fly! Soar with Jemsbooks!

What three pieces of advice would you give to someone who wants to write and publish a book?

I encourage anyone who dreams of being an author to do the following:

  1. Dream big, and don’t let anyone crush your dreams!!
  2. Write in some form every day.
  3. Believe in yourself and do what you love to do!

If you want something bad enough, you will achieve it. I am still working on being the second J.R. Rowling! Ha! I may never get there, but I will have the time of my life trying!

Thank you so much, Hugh, for having me here with my book for the month of June. It is an honor to be recognized by you on your incredible blog. Blessings to you!
