There’s weird, and then there’s really weird! No, I’m not talking about a typical ‘Hugh’ day, but music videos. From multi-award winning videos from 1986 to videos recorded in black and white that make everybody in them look like Hollywood superstars, the music industry never ceases to amaze me with what is produced to promote a song.
If there were an award for most weird video then this one, in my books, would get my vote. It’s one of the strangest I’ve come across, although I love the song.
See what I mean by weird? I mean, what are those things? Potatoes? And did anybody else find the ending of the video quite sad?
Starlight, by The Superman Lovers, also features Mani Hoffman on vocals, and was a huge dancefloor hit on much of planet Earth. Its highest chart position was at number two in France and the U.K, but it also became a top ten hit in five other countries. The song was never released as a single in North America.
Here’s another cool video of the song, which I hope will play for those who the first video would not play for. This one is a must watch for fans of animation science fiction.
And here’s the audio-video version.
Thank you to everyone who left a link to a favourite song in the comments section of last week’s post. And a big thank you to Ruth, Marie, and Kat who all joined in with publishing a blog post of a favourite song, and to Terri who also linked a post to this feature.
I’m also linking this post to Ritu’s #musicalmarch.

Definitely a weird video – puts me in mind of the work of Tim Burton. But as he didn’t do music videos, I turn to someone else who’s just a little bit off the wall – David Byrne
I like how David Byrne used similar effects in his video to that of the one I showcased a few weeks ago for the Peter Gabriel song. I agree about Tim Burton. When I saw the video to ‘Starlight’ I immediately thought of the movie ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas.’
I’m ahead of you with Sledgehammer. That was my initial thought, but I immediately realised it had already been covered. But I did like Talking Heads because the songs were quirky as well as the videos. Keep ’em coming, Hugh!
Wow, you are certainly right…that’s one bizzare video for sure!!!! Also, yes a little said in the end – poor Mr. Potato. You win the prize for finding the weirdest video 🙂 🙂 !!! 🙂
Thank you. I’m glad you agree with me about the video. I’ll happily take that prize. 😀
You had me at the potato song Hugh. I am a big potato fan. In fact here is one of my favorite songs about potatoes. I hope you enjoy it, I have used in one of my posts I’ve done about my love of potatoes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i69Rz4yb3cA
What a fun song, Molly. Who would have thought there was a whole song dedicated to the potato. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Don’t hesitate to leave a link to that post here.
Oh, thanks, Hugh. Here is the link to one of my posts about my love affair with the potato. Includes the song.

Thanks, Molly.
Well now, I did find the ending sad. Another new song and very interesting and strange video, Hugh. I can see why this would be a hit on the dance floor though. But that video- they were a little creepy looking, weren’t they? 🙂
They were, but I am glad they haven’t scared anyone off from my blog. Well, I hope they haven’t, anyway. 😀 I’ve always loved the song, but watching the video does creep me out a little. In many ways, it reminds me of the movie ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas.’ Glad you enjoyed my choice of song, Kat. It’s always been a favourite of mine.
Thanks Hugh. I loved the potato video. It was brilliant. I am always amazed at people’s imagination. I thought it was sad at the end too. His little friend leaving to live in space. (sob).
You are not going to be able to top this one buddy.
Thanks, Chris. No, next week’s artist is already shaking in their boots. I’ll give them a great introduction, though.
Okay, that was the strangest video and song I’ve never heard. Where do you find these things? Lol. I think they were potatoes? And did Mr. Potatoehead lose his best friend? 🙂 xo
I have a habit of finding strange things, Debby. I have a bit of a habit of doing strange things as well (like putting my house keys in the fridge), but that’s another story. Yes, I think from the comments on this post, they are potatoes (at least I hope they are). A sad ending to such a weird video. Who writes this stuff? 🤔 Am I digging myself into a corner here after writing and publishing a book containing 28 weird short stories? 🤔 Now, where did I put my house keys? 😀
Lol, you have established your style Hugh, and your choice of videos demonstrates your eclectic talents. Now, keys in the fridge – that is a menopausal thing, LOL oh no! 🙂 xo
Interesting indeed! You have a knack for finding some doozys–in a good way! Yes, once again, North America was left out of the fun. I’m still of the MTV generation with the Friday Night Video Fights, LOL!
We’ll certainly be making a lot more trips back in my time machine to those MTV days, Terri. Stay tuned 🙄 (excuse the pun). 😉
Great song. The potato video is the best. For really weird, play all three videos at the same time.
I never thought of that. Reminded me of when we were able to play records backwards. Now that did produce some weird results.
This is definitely a weird video. I hadn’t heard or seen it before, but I like it a lot! It had me giggling! I think they are potatoes, at least the little mouse looking one seems to be a sweet potato/yam! I was rooting for the two of them to get a contract, and it was sad at the end. 🙂 … Here’s my entry for this week … enjoy! http://wp.me/p3RE1e-2Fs
Thanks, Barbara. Glad somebody else agrees with me that those things were potatoes. Whoever designed them sure had a strange sense of imagination that day.
Such a catchy song.
Thank you. I agree. It’s very catchy.
I can’t stop singing it now.
I loved that song, but agree that the video is pretty weird! Poor little potato at the end , he was crying!
My choice for this week always brings a smile to my face. I love the Communards and watching Jimmy Somervile and Sarah Jane Morris dancing together. I remember Mr Grump and my best friend Karen doing a pretty good rendition of it at the time! 🙂
Hey, Judy, attach the clip for us. I’m a big fan of Mr Somerville. Once saw him at Barcelona airport and found out he was heading to the same place as me. 😀
Sorry, I forgot to add the clip! I will sort it out, Hugh.
Wow, he always strikes me as a warm, friendly person. 🙂
Here is the clip!
I remember when I had the same size waistline as Jimmy, Judy. This song has been covered so many times, but I think you’ve selected the best version. 😉
I know, it is so full of energy and life. It is definitely my favourite version. I love a few of the Communards songs actually.
Jimmy was TINY, Hugh. It is better to have a bit of meat on your bones, in my opinion! 🙂
100% agreed, Judy. 😀
I love them all 💓
Thanks, Willow.
I like the potato version. A little sad until the turnip/rat/possum was in the hot tub.
He/she/it seemed to be having a great time, John.
Ha! Fun post, Hugh. Have a terrific Tuesday. Hugs.
You To..uesday, as well, Teagan.
xx
Yup, definitely the strangest video that I’ve seen recently…with a very sad ending! Beautiful song though. Thanks for sharing this.
Glad you agree, Donna. I do love the song and always find myself tapping my feet to it.
What a strange video!!!
Phew! Glad you think so as well, Ritu.
That was fun, Hugh. Great song and creative videos. The potato people one was a little sad at the end, I agree. Awesome post. 🙂
I almost shed a tear for that potato person at the end of the first video, Diana. Glad you enjoyed both the music and the videos. I don’t know how next week’s song is going to live up to this?
I’m sure you’ll find something. 😀 There are thousands of awesome songs!
I like that song, never heard it before. Yes, the first video is probably the strangest I have ever seen too!
Good. I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking that, Erika. 😀
Haha! I am sure you are not the only one… lol!
Hi Hugh
Back in my Disco Betty days, this would have been fun to dance to. I love the animation. Who comes up with these ideas. They have to be stoned. LOL
Or very drunk. Chuck. Keep this to yourself, but I’ve written a few of my short stories while under the influence of a certain red drink 🍷
I would never tell anyone. It will be between us.🤓😜
Although I never heard this before, I like to see the various ways in which the music was imagined.,
I’m always amazed by what people come up with for music video’s, Noelle. The Wildstar video is really cool.
