51 Weeks: 51 Songs From The Past: Week 1: ABBA – Happy New Year

Welcome to the first of several brand new features here on Hugh’s Views & News.

51 weeks 51 songs from the past poster

Over the next 51 weeks, I’ll be showcasing 51 songs from the past. Who better to start the music ball rolling, with a song very apt for the time of year, than one of the best-selling groups of all time, ABBA.

‘Happy New Year’ is a song taken from the 1980 album, Super Trouper. However, it wasn’t until 1999 that it was first released as a single in several European countries. Since then it has been rereleased several times with its highest chart position being in 2008 at number 4 in Sweden. The song has never been released as a single in the UK, which is one of the reasons I’ve chosen to showcase it.

Want to join Hugh in building up your 51 favourite songs from the past? Leave a link in the comments section below and showcase your first song.

  1. I didn’t respond at first…love your idea for these posts, but sadly, have never been an ABBA fan. They were a pop phenomenon, still. My roots are somewhere between R & B, Beatles, and early hard rock. My first single purchased was “Heat Wave” Martha & the Vandellas. Blame it on Philadelphia ! ☺☺☺ I’ll stay tuned to your list, Hugh. 💗

    1. I knew there would be non-ABBA fans out there, Van. I know it’s all down to personal choice, but I’m so very glad that ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 as, otherwise, we may have never heard from them again. 😀
Thanks for sharing your first single with us. I’ll have to Google it as the song title does not ring a bell, but Martha & the Vandellas do. 😀

    1. lol, well, you know how I’ve said before that my blog is a variety blog? That means not everyone will enjoy everything I publish. I’m sure you’ll know some of the other 50 songs I’ve lined up. That is, of course, if you continue to follow the feature 😀

Canva is one of my best friends and it was you that introduced it to me. So, thanks for that.

  3. Great idea Hugh. I was always a huge ABBA fan, in fact last night I watched an old Aussie classic, Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Crazy but enjoyable with ABBA snippets throughout. Have you seen it?
