How many times have you clicked on the Gravatar image of somebody who has left a comment on a blog post and not been able to find their blog details? Frustrating, isn’t it?
The image that appears next to a comment is known as a Gravatar. Here’s an example.
If I hover my mouse over Ritu’s image, the following happens.
If I wanted to find Ritu’s blog, I would need to click on the ‘View Complete Profile’ button.
When I do that, I’m taken to her Gravatar page.
Ritu’s websites, including her blog, are listed towards the bottom of the page. All I have to do is click on the ‘But I Smile Anyway‘ blog image (under ‘Websites’) and, hey presto, I’m taken straight to her blog.
But how do you add your WordPress blog to your Gravatar profile?
- Using a search engine, search for Gravatar.
- Sign into Gravatar by using your WordPress sign in details (top right of the page).
- You’ll be taken to your Gravatar page.
- Click on ‘My Profile.’
- In the right-hand box, click on ‘Websites.’
- At the bottom of the page click on the ‘Add WordPress.Com Site’ button.
On this page, you can also add other websites such as your Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites by clicking on the ‘Add Website’ button.
- Select the WordPress blog you want to add.
- Click on ‘Add Checked’ and/or ‘Save’.
Your WordPress blog will now be added to your Gravatar.
Any questions? Leave me a comment, and I’ll get back to you.

I remember not being able to do this and finding it frustrating. Your post gave me a nudge to check out mine and make sure everything was all good- it is! I had completely forgotten about this and had a momentary panic that I had never figured it out. 🙂
Good to hear you had, Kat. Always worth checking, though. I recently added some more of my social media accounts to my Gravatar.
Another popular one Hugh, we will feature this on the next Blogger’s Pit Stop
Kathleen
Blogger’s Pit Stop
That’s wonderful news, Kathleen. Thank you so much.
I can’t remember if I set mine up or not! Thanks for sharing the directions with us at The Blogger’s Pit Stop! Roseann from http://www.thisautoimmunelife.com
You’re welcome. I hope you managed to check if yours is all set up on your Gravatar?
I think I’m all set up with my Gravatar, but need my computer to double-check. Since I have not sat at my desk for a few days, I will finally leave a comment first and check tomorrow. 🙂 As to reposting older blogs, I’m playing with the idea to do so myself in a little while. But, I’d like to share some of my “adventurous” sailing posts from my previous blog as a preface to my memoir stories or something like that. Few people, if any of my recent followers, have seen those.
All of the archives of our blogs are filled with treasure, Liesbet. It’s definitely worth bringing out those old blog posts and giving them another airing. I don’t think many readers have the time to delve into them to see what might be in there. I’m sure you’ll see that they will be very successful when you republish them.
Yep, my website was hooked up to my Gravatar, but you inspired me to complete my profile and add a few other sites. Thanks, Hugh! 🙂
That’s great to know, Liesbet. I did the same thing with my ‘about me’ page yesterday.
Another great piece of advice! Thanks!
You’re very welcome.
I’m glad you’re bringing these posts out again. This one would have made no sense to me in 2016, but I could do something about it today.
That’s great to hear, April. I’m always delighted to help fellow bloggers and writers out.
It seems like it is not just my pet peeve Great idea to repeat this post and for that, I thank you, Hugh…
You’re welcome, Carol. I’ve lots more of these types of posts coming up.
Have a lovely weekend.
I hope you have a great weekend as well Hugh 🙂
Hi, Hugh – I just checked out my own Gravatar and made some changes. Thanks for the prompt!
You’re welcome, Donna. I did the same when updating this post yesterday.
Great timing on this post, Hugh, I think there are many newer and inexperienced bloggers out there that don’t use this feature. Some don’t want to show their picture (which is ridiculous). I tend to NOT follow bloggers who don’t take this important step, because honestly, spam sites don’t have gravatars and you can’t tell the difference. I hope people read this and take it to heart, to help improve their blog’s credibility. And you gave me a great idea for sharing some older posts of my own 🙂
I agree, Terri. I can’t remember when I first came across this tip for the Gravatar, but I know just how much I appreciated coming across it. I know that for those of us who are a little camera shy, Gravatar also allows images for each profile, so there’s no excuse for not having some kind of image on a Gravatar if you don’t want to show yourself. And that’s a great tip about spammers not having any image on their Gravatar. I never thought about that.
That’s great that I’ve inspired some ideas for you about sharing older blog posts. Our blog archives are full of treasure that was not discovered enough when we first published those posts.
Hi Hugh! I read this post a couple of days ago in your archives and made that change. Thanks so much! Now, maybe you can help with something else… When I changed my blog theme a few months ago, I changed my Gravatar too. For some reason, my old Gravatar picture still shows up in the upper right corner on my blog post emails. Someone told me that it’s called a Favicon, but I have no idea how to change it to be the same picture as my Gravatar.
Did you also change your photo on the site settings page of your blog? Go to the dashboard of your blog and click on settings. Under the ‘general’ tab you’ll see the site icon for your blog. You can change it by clicking on the ‘change’ button. Let me know if it’s not that and I’ll see what I can find out for you.
I think that may have done it! Once again, you have been most helpful! Thank you!!!
You’re very welcome. I’m so glad we came up with the answer straight away.
Thank you – that’s really useful.
You’re very welcome.
Another great piece of advice, Hugh. I am going to make sure that mine is properly updated! 🙂
I did exactly the same thing when rewriting and updating the original post, Judy. 😀
I am pleased to say that mine has got the right info on it, Hugh! 🙂

Wow, I’m so embarassed that I didn’t have my wordpress blog linked to my gravatar profile, you never stop learning do you? Thanks so much for this very easy to follow and very useful tutorial 🙂
I’m still learning new stuff about blogging every day, Anne. You’re very welcome. Glad this post came in useful for you.
Well that’s a relief that I’m not the only one haha
This was as clear as mud. I still don’t know how to do it.
Oh, sorry you didn’t find my instructions clear enough.
Here’s a link from the Gravatar people. Hopefully, it’ll be more helpful to you.

It’s unfortunate that I can’t visit likers because they have no contact page on their gravatar!
It seems to be a problem that many tend to overlook. With so many blogs out there, we need to do all we can to let readers know where we are.
Thanks, Hugh. You’re right, it’s a big problem. Thanks for the guidance.
You’re very welcome, Olga.

Hi Hugh. You are so right. I try to “return the favor” and “share the love” despite having no time at all for it. The chase to get to another blog can be maddening. And then — take what happened to me recently. Someone left a comment on my blog, asking me to please leave a like and follow theirs. (I really don’t appreciate that behavior in the first place, but I told myself it was a lesson in generosity, gratitude, and PATIENCE.) However, the Gravitar went nowhere, there was no blog address in the “guts” of my comments. Finally I got to their blog — and there was no place to put a like or leave a comment. Seriously???
TGI(my)F(riday off) is almost here. 😀 Mega hugs.
Sounds to me as if they need to go on one of the free online blogging courses WordPress offer, Teagan. They are a wealth of information. I think part of the problem is that too many new bloggers tend to chase the numbers. I was much the same, but then I started reading blogging tips posts and started to put into practice what they were telling me. The followers soon started coming in without me having to chase them to come and read my blog.
I think you have a lot more patience than me. I always check out the blogs of new followers, but if there is no ‘about me’ page or it takes me more than 30 seconds to find it, then I gave up. Oh, and not to mention the ‘about me’ pages that start with “This is an example of an about me page…” Urrrrrr!
Happy Friday.
Hugs.

Thank you for sharing this post, Marianne.

Dear Hugh, Thank you for this. Turns out I had only done half the job. Your guidance has been extremely helpful and much appreciated! 🙂
You’re very welcome, Skilbey. I’m always very pleased when I hear from someone who has told me that my advice has helped.
Thanks for that, Hugh. I’ll have to check it out. I usually just right click on the person’s name and open up their blog in a new tab. I’ve never bothered about the gravatars.
Hi Norah, thank you so much for this tip. I never knew you could do that. I just tried it out by just clicking on the name and, although a new tab did not open, I was taken to the blog page of the person who left the comment. Brilliant! I thought it might make Gravatars redundant, but I see your Gravatar follows you from site to site and is used on many other sites and forums. I guess there could be a possibility of it not working on all sites. That’s something I’ll need to check out.
Thanks once again. 😀
I’m pleased I could be helpful in return, Hugh. 🙂 I right click, and then click to open in a new tab. I guess that’s a habit I’m in so I don’t lose the page I’m on in case I want to return to it. I look forward to learning what you discover in your research.
Hi Norah. I did quite a lot of research into this. I’d still recommend that you attach your blog to your Gravatar. When on other forums and sites that use Gravatars, if you click on the name of the person who left the comment then you are taken to their home page of the site you are on (not their WordPress Blog). Of course, they would only know you had a blog if they clicked on ‘view complete profile’ and saw your blog there.
My stats do show traffic from other sites, but what I don’t know is if any of these were from clicking on my Gravatar. I suppose it’s better to have your blog attached to your Gravatar just in case anyone does click on it from another site.
However, thank you for your handy tip. I’ll certainly be using it when on WordPress.
Thanks for doing the research and sharing your findings, Hugh. It’s interesting the way different hosts work. I’ll have to add updating my Gravatar to the list of things to do! 🙂
This series of posts you’ve been doing, Hugh, has highlighted just how little I understand about how WP works – and I mean that in a good way. Yet another great help
You’re welcome, Graham. If I may, I’d like to include your comment in an upcoming post. Would that be ok with you?
If it was anyone else, I’d want to know what the context was first, but – as with Ritu – I trust you implicitly. Just remember to spell my name right…
Oops! Sorry
Graham…I mean, Graeme.Leave it with me. And, thank you.

Thanks for sharing my latest blogging tip, Sally.

You are the new WordPress guru Hugh! xo 🙂
That’s very kind of you to say, thank you, Debby. I’ve learned so much from other far more experienced bloggers, though. 😀 They are the real gurus. 😎
Well look what you’ve learned. Now your teach others. It’s like school, we learn there from teachers, and what we become, the possibilities are endless. ❤
I completely agree. I’ve even learned one new trick about blogging just from the comments on this post. I feel like a rocket that has just be launched. 🌜
Lol, where it stops, nobody knows! 🙂
Hugh you have brilliant tips. I tried your idea for increasing blog traffic in your last post, and it’s worked amazingly with my latest story. Would never have done it but for you. Thanks a million
That’s excellent to hear about my tips from a post last week have worked for you, Geoffrey. If you don’t mind then I’d love to use your comment in an upcoming post?
Hugh, I believe your how-to series on some blogging basics and tips is perfect for this time of year as many bloggers are getting back into it, as well as new ones starting. Love these!
Thanks, Terri. Yes, I think many bloggers are returning after the summer break.
I started reading your book today. Boy, did it get me to take some action.
Haha, then my work is done, lol!

Everybody please do this. I want to find your blog!
Thank you very much for the reblog. Barbara.
Thanks for helping to spread the word about this one Hugh. Empty Gravatars with no other way of finding someone’s blog is one of my blogging pet peeves.
I’m with you on that, Norm. I’ve clicked on a few new Gravatars recently to find nothing but an empty space.
Thanks for this post. I always face this problem.
I hope it helps, Indira. Our Gravatar profiles can generate so much traffic to our blogs, but we do need to look after them and give them some attention from time to time.
Right dear. I’ll try now.
Thanks Hugh! I think I’m guilty of abusing my gravatar.
I hope you will now give it some TLC, Jan? 😀
I feel flattered and honored to be your example here Dear Hugh!!!!
Thank you for the article, I can see a few more things I can now update too! 😁😁😁😁😁
I should have really asked you if it was okay for me to use your Gravatar profile as an example, Ritu, but I’m very happy that you’re flattered. Next time, I will ask first. 😀
Glad the article has helped. A gentle reminder is alway very welcome.
I know you’d never do anything untoward Hugh!!!! 😚😚😚

Please, Please, PLEASE – update your Gravatar and let us all know where to find you and even – 😱 SHUDDER 😱 – follow you on your blog and/or other media 🐵
Thanks for sharing my plea, Chris. 👍
Welcome Hugh – hopefully some more of our followers will actually pay attention and fix their Gravatars 😱😄
I hope so, Chris. I’ve clicked on a few Gravatars recently because of a comment that has been left, only to find an empty space. 😔
Me too – I’ve posted and reblogged several times about it – hopefully the message gets through 😃
I’ll have to check mine out, haven’t done it for a while. Thanks, Hugh 🙂
You’re welcome, Cathy.
I just clicked on mine and noticed that I have to edit my blog name! Wow, thanks for this post, Hugh!!!
There’s so much to remember to do when you change things, aren’t there?
You’re welcome, Erika.
Oh, my God, yes!!! And thanks to you I got reminded what I forgot … lol!
Could be a good blog post to write – Things to remember to do when changing your blog name. I recently changed my Twitter name and I’m still finding places where I need to update the details.
Oh yes! That is a great idea! Please, do that. I am sure there is more I did not think of!
