Black and White Photography Challenge: Day 1

Elizabeth over at Tea and Paper recently invited me to complete the five-day Black and White photo challenge.  When I got her invite, I started to panic as the last time I took a black and white photo was before the days of colour cameras becoming affordable, so now you know just how long ago I am talking about.

There are only two rules for this challenge:

1. On 5 consecutive days, create a post using either a past or recent photo in black and white.
2. Each day invite another blogging friend to join in the fun.

Now Elizabeth came up with some stunning black and white photography, and I was so impressed that I contacted her for some help with the challenge.  She told me about a few apps for the iPhone so I could take photos in black and white, and it was not long before I was using my brand new app and taking pictures.

I could not resist using our dog, Toby, as a model for my first photo for this challenge.  This photo of him was taken on our recent weekend trip to Devon. He was sat in our room looking out towards the beach and sea.  He loves to run along the beach but, like me, is not at all keen in going in to the sea.

I’d like to invite Claudette at To Search and to Find to take up the black and white photo challenge.  She posts some wonderful photography on her blog which I am always impressed with.  Whenever I see any of her photos, I feel as if I am standing right there in front of the object she has photographed.  Plus, she has recently got herself a brand new camera which I know she is still experimenting with.  Claudette has also just announced she is having her head shaved to raise money for Leukaemia Research so, like me, please pop over to her blog and sponsor her for this very worthwhile cause.

Check out Day’s Two photo by clicking here.

Of course blogging is all about fun, so the invite to take up the challenge is optional to all those I am nominating this week.

  1. Reblogged this on Covey View and commented:
Two important reasons I want to share this with you:
    1. Hugh’s beautiful b&w dog, Toby
    2. A great opportunity to sponsor Claudette. She’s shaving her head for Leukemia Research. Go Now to sponsor her.

    1. Thank you, Meredith. I know that Claudette will be so thankful to you as well for mentioning her charity head shave. I’ve sponsored her, and am sure your reblog will get more over to her blog who will sponsor her as well. She’s also after some advise on the best hats to wear after the shave, seeing as in her part of the world Autumn is arriving, which means chilly mornings and evenings.

    1. Thanks, Stacy. I’ve been amazed with the photos I am taking with the iPhone 6. It truly does have a great camera and I’m just starting to discover all the wonderful photo apps out there as well 🙂

  2. A lovely photo Hugh and what a handsome dog.
Loving the new look blog also.
Colleen has asked me to do this challenge: one of these days I’ll get started on it. But, not this day. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Dorne. I’ve only changed the colours on the blog and added my Mildred Widget. I may change themes soon, I’m just not sure what to do at the moment and, knowing me, it will be a spur of the moment thing.

Yes, Toby is a handsome chap if I don’t say so myself. He’s very stubborn as well, but that’s the Welsh in him.

I wasn’t aware Colleen had done this challenge. I must have missed it, probably when I had that week away writing that horror story.

      Have fun with it.

  3. Just a thought Hugh – I have an app called Camera+ which will convert any photo to black and white and many other effects with its filter buttons. It’s very easy to use and there are several different black and white effects to choose from. 😊

    1. Thanks, Maria. I’ve just looked it up and will have a proper look at it. If it comes highly recommend by you then I know it’s worth having. Thank you very much for the tip. There’s so many apps out there that it’s always good to get a recommendation.

      1. I use this app most of all. There’s a clarity button that sharpens photos and you can run a phto through twice or more if you want a clearer image. It’s fun to experiment with this.

Another app I have is called reduce and it compresses photos so that no side is more than 800 pixels. This means the photos load much faster. 😊

        1. I knew you’d be an expert at all things apps, Maria. I remember asking for advise on apps before, and you recommended some very good ones to me. I’ve check Camera plus and it’s on the iPhone as well, so I’ve downloaded it. Many thanks again, for all your advise on this.

  4. Just love the look on Toby’s face. 😊. How could you miss with such a beautiful model? Great response to the black and white challenge, Hugh.

And you are right Claudette takes especially good photos as well. Cheers. 😊

    1. Thanks, Maria. When he wants to model, and there’s maybe a biscuit in it for him, he’ll do it. All too often he moves right at the wrong moment, so I was very happy to have got this shot. He’ll be featuring again, later in the week, for this challenge.

  5. Toby is a really cutie, Hugh! Lovely clear image, Hugh. I didn’t know there were iPhone apps for B&W photos . Do you think using the app makes a better back and white photo than editing it afterwards?

    1. Yes, I was amazed just how well this photo came out, Jill. I’ve been using an app to take my black and white photos and it seems to have worked really well for me. I’ve never tried editing a photo to a black and white version so I can’t be sure if using an app is better than editing, but I’m very pleased with the app I am using. It’s called Hueless. I liked the name of it, so downloaded it straight away.

  6. I’m not sure if Toby has a very wistful look about him there or whether he’s just perfected ‘The Pose’ for when he sees the camera. Whichever it is, you can celebrate a great start to the competition.

    1. Believe me, David, when I say that usually he moves just at the moment I take any photo of him. In this one he was just so wanting to get on the beach which was just the other side of the door, but a passing shower prevented us going out for a few minutes.

Thank you very much. I got four more days to go with this challenge so I’m hoping the rest go down well. Thank you for the retweet as well.

  7. Thanks for the lovely recommendation Hugh, and for the shout out for the Leukemia Foundation. Now I will have to go and ramble through the photos looking for some black and white.
P.S really a lovely shot of Toby

    1. You are very welcome, Claudette. I’m sure you will come up with far better photos for the challenge than I will. However, just ensure you have fun with this challenge (like I am).

I like this shot of Toby so much that I’m going to get it framed. He may just appear in another photo I have coming up for the challenge this week.

      1. We are all different Hugh and that is a good thing. I think photos are what speak to our hearts, and that may be different every day.
It is a lovely shot of Toby, and b & w suits the style of his ocncentration. 🙂

    1. I’m sure you can, but I’ve never tried Photoshop. When it comes to editing photos, I’m not very good at it at all. I found just using an app that took black and white photos far more easier to use.

        1. ohh! Well let me know if you want help with something…. like if you want me to do a custom design/picture for you or so… 🙂

        2. That’s really kind of you, thanks, Serins. I usually choose a theme which has no design for a picture heading (like my current theme), but if I do choose/change themes I’ll certainly keep your kind offer of help in mind. Thank you so much.

  8. Fab choice UH! :0) I almost thought Toby had hijacked your blog again & taken a selfie – there’s no raised paw but I wldn’t put it past him to set the camera timer! :0) I love black & white pictures from years ago too, full of poignancy & romantic nostalgia xx

    1. You know I thought people may have thought that when I chose this photo of him. I’m really pleased with it, so much so, that I’m going to get it framed. I think he knows just how handsome he is. I don’t think it will be long before he has his own iPhone to take photos with 🙂

      1. He is something of a doggy hunk isn’t he?! Not vain – just enjoys natural gd looks :0) that said, he probably cldn’t help admiring his own reflection when looking out of the window at the sea :0) xx

  9. Great photo Hugh! I’m happy you have started the challenge, the dog is cute, I really like the contrast between the horizontal lines from the shelf with the vertical from the heater in the background, nice effect! I’m enjoying Claudette blog as well, great choice!

    1. Thanks, Elizabeth, and thank you for inviting me to participate in the challenge. I’ve had some great fun with it and can’t stop taking photos in Black and White now. 🙂

Four more days to go and I’ve already got too many photos I want to add.

      1. It’s funny, I’m taking lots of black and white photos now and I’ve changed my blog header for b&w photo. Can’t wait to see all your photos! 🙂
